Toilet training and disposable nappies

I've read that one of the disadvantages of using disposable nappies when toilet training is due to the fact that they are so good at absorbing liquid that the child never gets the 'wet' feeling to learn properly when they are urinating. I was just wondering if a way around this issue would be to put a piece of material in the nappy similarly to how you would put a liner in a cloth nappy...? That way the child would feel the dampness on the piece of material, but the nappy would still absorb the majority of the liquid after it passed through the "liner".

Thoughts?

I guess you could always try it and see? otherwise when youre toilet training switch to pull ups as they have a "wetness" liner so they still feel it! I still think the best way for them to learn when they are urinating is to just start putting them on the potty :)

DD was in modern cloth nappies, and I found it didn't help her TT (we're still trying!), saying that the pull ups didn't work either. Mind you, she's happy being wet and pooy so thats a hurdle I've got to get over!

Ours always wees in the potty but she will go to great lengths to poo in a nappy and it is hard to get pooey nappies off her, even if they are dried on, squished into every orifice and oozing out the legs - there's no way she can NOT feel that, and it is also amazing how fast a toddler who doesn't want their nappy changed can run.

We've just taken to getting the nappy off her as soon as she's out of bed (if she's not already poopy) and delaying putting the nappy on at night until just before bed. If we don't, she'll poop just after she gets up and just before bed. Hence the regular battle of wanting to keep the morning nappy on as long as possible, and wanting the evening one on as early as possible.

How on earth did that double post? I pressed it once and wandered off cos BB is so slow lol

I don't think it made any difference to Brendan at all, I think we just tried too early for him. But it's worth a try, it might help. Sorry that's not really helpful x

Thanks for all the responses girls :) I haven't started trying to toilet train yet because DS is only 17 months, but if he starts to show signs that he's ready then I'd be happy to try. SammyRo, he sounds similar to your DD because he never gets uphappy with being in a full wet or poopy nappy.

SneakySparkle, good idea about the pull ups too! I forgot that they had the wetness liner to help them feel when they urinate. When we start the toilet training I'm going to begin by putting the potty on the floor in the lounge and letting him sit on it with his morning toast while he watches the wiggles or something. I won't stress if he does nothing, but if he does something then I'll make a huge deal out of it and hopefully he'll want to do it again, lol!

RumpledElf - I have a niece who was the same. She refused to do poop in the potty or on the toilet and would demand a nappy when she needed to go. Once she did it once though she was much happier to do it again and again :)

~Sally~ - I was thinking about starting toilet training before bub arrives, but I think it's just a bit too early for him. I thought it might make things easier if I had him out of nappies, but I think I'm realising that in reality it would probably be harder to be toilet training and reminding him to use the potty every half hour with a new born. I think I'll just keep him in the nappies :)

2 in nappies is not that bad!! Just change both at once one newborn is that bit bigger and not needing as frequent changes.
DS1 tells us he has done poo or going to do poo but only in nappy, doesn't like sitting on toilet, potty is just to play with currently!

I had 3 in nappies, and its not that bad. Just what feeb said, change them all at the same time!

I think the whole thing about kids wearing disposables are harder to train is just a big myth. I think our parents said that because we trained earlier when we were children, but I think because our parents forced us to train, whether we were ready or not. Whereas I waited until DS was well and truly ready before trying because I didn't want to clean up wee and poo over the floor because its too hard to worry about doing that when you have other kids. DS was 3 and 2 months before he trained. DD1 is 26 months and shows no sign of wanting to train, so I don't care if it takes her till she is 3 also - at least you can talk to them by that stage and they really understand what you are saying, and you can get more out of them - conversation wise! LOL

Oh - and my kids wear cloth, which is why I think its a big myth ;)

One of the Pull Ups type nappy things has the special thingy in it so the kid can feel when they are wet... they advertise it on TV but i can not for the life of me think what it is... but they are specially made for toilet training... check in the aisle at Coles.. they definitely have them..
