Referral duration
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge about referrals.
I've been seeing a gyne for fertility issues for about a year. My last visit was last week, and as I was leaving the receptionist told me that if I need to go back then I'll need a new referral. I was a bit surprised because the problem is the same - unfortunately - nothing has changed there! My gyne didn't mention the referral and she's expecting us back if DH and I decide to go ahead with IVF (we probably will).
Do referrals 'expire'? This is all new for me, and I have no idea.
Thanks girls. Any wisdom appreciated!

Hi Allie
A referral only has a 12 month life. I have been asked to get a new referral before I go back to my specialist too. Not sure about why only 12 months - maybe something to do with Medicare?

Generally referrals last for 12 months. I'm sure it has something to do with medicare, too.
However, it is possible to ask for an ongoing referral which is unlimited. I didn't know they existed until my referral to my rheumatologist expired for the third time and this time my GP gave me an ongoing one.

Yep, referrals last for 12 months, some less. If you don't have a valid referral when you go to see your specialist then you won't be able to claim any money from Medicare.

As the other girls have said a referal will only last 12 months. I was told by my OB receptionist that its b/c of Medicare.

Thanks for your advice girls. I feel more confident now. I'll get a new referral later this month, I just wasn't sure whether I needed to before.
Have a Fun Friday everyone.
