DS not sleeping 'unwrapped' HELP

DS is five months & has just started to roll from back to front & is doing it at every opportunity.

DH wrapped him & put him in this cot two nights ago & a few minutes later DS was crying hysterically. He had rolled onto his stomach & to the edge of the cot and couldn't get back and was very upset. :cry:

We then decided that it would be safer to remove the wrap & just have him in his sleeping bag with a 'pocket' sheet over him for security.

He (and we) have hardly slept for two nights. He waves his arms around, digs them into his head & pulls his ears and cries for hours, even when we are there comforting him. He did however self-settle this morning & sleep for 1.5 hours but then wouldn't sleep again & only had another sleep because I put him in my ergo carrier & took the dog for a long walk.

I read in some other posts that rolling does not necessarilly mean you have to stop wrapping but I am scarred that he will roll onto his tummy regularly & not be able to get back so we will have ongoing sleepless nights.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can make DS feel more secure in his transition from wrapped to unwrapped?

I would try rolling a couple of wraps and putting them either side of him when you put him down wrapped. Will stop him being able to roll over and may help your problem until you can get him used to sleeping unwrapped.
Also you can try putting him down half wrapped - so leave his arms out, and wrap from under his armpits.

We have the same problem and what we are doing is working atm (touch wood)

We use a sleep protection thingie ,where they like in between and has two cushion like things on either side to help stop them rolling,DD can only settle wrapped ,we have tried her in sleeping bags but she thrashes everywhere.
what we are doing is for a week or so we have been wrapping her but keeping one arm out ,then next week we will move onto wrapping just under her arms untill we will just pop her in a sleeping bag and hopfully she will be ok

we started by wrapping DD1 with only one arm tucked in, then progressed to her being only wrapped from under the armpits (so half wrapped).

Get a Safe-T-Sleep Sleep Wrap. Honestly they are the best things around for this very problem. Its a long piece of material that wraps around the mattress and another attached that wraps around bub so they can roll over. They are worth the piece of mind and the sleep!

We wrapped DD until 15 months LOL. I think back in those earlier days we used a safety cushion thing too to prevent her rolling, or else just tuck a top sheet over her quite firmly. Towards the end of the 15 months tho she wasn't staying wrapped all night, it was just an initial sleep cue kind of thing.

At 22 months Sam still relies on being wrapped as his cue for day sleeps. He also needs to be cuddled, just so that he stays still long enough to fall asleep. When I put him in the cot, I have to unwrap him so that he can stay asleep and roll around. Would wrapping to help him go to sleep and then unwrapping once he is asleep work?

I wrap DD to get her over to sleep and then unwrap her when she is asleep. This is working really well for us.

Thanks. After my post last night we had a pretty good night - not as good as a wrapped night but much better than the past two. DS went to bed around 7:30 but didn't actually settle until 8:45...okay, this was a long time for him but way better than the previous nights. He then slept until 3am & had a feed and needed to be resettled again for about 20 mins before going back to sleep (usually goes straight to sleep) and slept until 8am (NEVER usually does that!).

Not sure how tonight will go but this gives me hope.

We did a couple of things differently....it was cold here so he had mittens (may have helped with head scratching & ear pulling) and I made the sheet over the top much tighter. Not sure if they helped or he is just a very clever little man!

I would be too scarred I would wake DS if I had to unwrap. He wakes quite easily even from a deep sleep.

I thought the things you put into the cot with the cushions either side to stop rolling were a SIDS risk....don't know where I read this but just seem to think I read it somewhere.

Times sure are testing when DS wont sleep & we do understand if it is hard for us it is even harder & more distressing for him which is the worst part of it all.

The night after my post above DS took more than two hours after a night feed and was still not settled so we wrapped him, a quick feed & straight to sleep. He sleeps better than ever now. I think he was giving us a clear message he was not ready to be unwrapped.

Next time we try I will try the one arm at a time technique...we might leave it a while though, we are all too traumatised & the pocket sheet is stopping him from rolling.
