Air con - worth getting air con man out or buy from Harvey Norman or similar?

So we need air con. And yes, that is a NEED! lol

Done pregnant Perth summer, newborn before, and done all my Perth summer's so far with no air con, and not again!! I will not cope with 3 year old and 8 months preg over chirstmas especially without it.

So, been looking around to get some rough pricing involved... Looking a split system inverter, and found one that seems suitable form HN's. I will shop around for the model for best price from other stores etc.

But i am wondering is it worth getting specific air con people out ot do quotes etc? They have been here once a year ago, and I KNOW they will try and up sell me some ducted crap, which is fine really cos I know what we want/need, but just wondering if there are any experiences out there worth sharing with me please?

At this stage we are only after one system for the lounge/kitchen/dining room, and the system I have found is powerful enough to do that area, and is reasonably priced so I am tempted to price match and buy ASAP...but don't want to make a huge mistake and have to outlay more money in the long run...

We got two aircons from an on-line company based in Perth, they are really helpful and we ended up with two correctly sized aircons for a great price. Worth checking out. They are called Getcool. They ship for free Aus wide.

We then got an electrician/aircon installer to put them in. Worked out well.

We got our split system last year from Good guys for same reason couldnt do summer with toddler and newborn!!
We then had to get someone to install, you pay so much and then depending on length of cabling etc they need its extra cost so be ware as was more than we though.

We had ducted evaporitive but wasnt that effective and was $ to run.
Harvey norman were more expensive when we were looking.

I'd get the quotes. It wont cost you and you will have a reference for how much the price difference is. Also if you do go ahead and buy a split system from HN you will still need to get a licenced installer to put it in so factor that cost into the equation (not sure how much they charge in WA).

Can you zone/close your living space from the rest of the house so the system isn't working too hard to cool the house?

Also have you considered an evaporative cooler system? THey are good for dry climates (no idea what WA's climate is like in summer). It may be more cost effective although modern split systems can be pretty energy efficient if you get the right type.
