I have a Jnr Activist - Proud Mummy Moment
Tonight the kids were playing schools as they often do. And she started teaching her brother about Orangutans and how they the males call the females to warn them of trouble. She then went on to tell him how people who are cultivating Palm Oil are killing the Orangutans and how they are an endangered species. Then went on to tell him that it was happening in Sumatra and Borneo and it had to stop. And that the only way we can stop them from doing it is to stop buying products that contain Palm Oil. Then went on to say that there was only 400-600 thousand Orangutans left in the world and that with all the Palm Oil cultivation their numbers are going down fast.
I was in the kitchen listening as she continued to talk about it, DS being a 4 year old thought it was part of the game and suggested that he get in his jet and and save them to which she got flustered and said "I'm SERIOUS" the only way we can stop them is make the government intervene" and how her Class is writing a letter to Julia Gillard but how she wants everyone to stop buying Palm Oil products and maybe they will realise they don't need to use it.
I'm so glad her school and especially her teacher is getting involved with this. Our school does have a very big humanitarian program and we are always involved in lots of charities and causes but this is such a controversial cause (to some, not to me obviously) so I am very happy that they are getting on board.
And the fact that she has absorbed every tiny piece of information.
I really hope all schools get on board.
