DS will be getting his tonsils removed soon. The surgeon says he will be miserable, in pain and take 2 weeks to recover. We have a book about getting tonsils out and this seems to indicate the girl in the story was back at school within a week. I know everyone will be different but am just after your stories of how long it took for your kids to recover from surgery and what level of discomfort they experienced.
Am I really in for 2 long hard horrible weeks or will it be shorter than that?
A friends 5 year old recently had his out as well as adenoids and grommets replaced, he was misrable for a week and off kinder for week, they then went away 10 days after OP (trip was booked 6 months before they knew he needed them out).
By 10 days he was much happier and perkear ad eating as normal again.
In the first week she kept up the painstop and tryed to keep him doing quiet activities.

I hope it's an easy and speedy recovery for your little one!! I can't give much advice as I had my tonsils out at 15, but if it helps any, I woke up from the surgery and ate McDonald's straight away, I was back doing tough rehearsals for the school musical within 2 days... it was pretty sore for about a week afterwards but a bit of codeine and lots of rest helped :) I know it's different as I was practically an adult, but I really hope your little man has a quick recovery and it's not a whole two weeks of misery for you all! He will feel much better once he's healed, no more nasty infections :) Good luck!
Yes will have to stock up on the Pain stop and Panadol. I have been told I need to keep that up 4 hourly. Wonder if he will wake overnight for that or if I will have to wake him or just leave him go....
I had mine out (and adenoids) when I was 5 and remember pain the morning after (especially when they make you eat breakfast!) and during that day but to be perfectly honest, I don't remember any excessive pain afterwards.

I was so surprised how well my then 21 month old DS coped. I gave him panadol around the clock for the first few days but after that he was pretty much back to normal. The hardest thing was trying to keep him from running around and resting. I hope you LO goes just as well.
Our DD1 just had hers out, she was 6, and I was surprised at how much pain she was in for the first week. We gave painstop and painstop night around the clock for a week and then downgraded to panadol. I hated giving her so much medicine but it was really needed. If we missed a dose by an hour, she would be screaming in pain and miserable. The Dr said some recover very quickly, and others take much longer, DD1 was one that look a long time. By 10 days post op she was much happier and by 14 days post op she was back to normal.
