so DD2 has a cough, runny nose etc.. when she coughs hard she really sucks in the chest wall, it makes a big dent in her diaphram area (hope i explained taht ok) her breathing isnt noisey and at times barks, she also has high temps.
im not really worried about the cough except for the times she almost chokes :o which isnt all the time, but is it normal to suck the chest in so much?
(Not a health professional.) That is called a chest retraction (at least if her chest is pulling in between her ribs), and it's a sign that she's working really hard to breathe. Medical professionals do seem to find it a bit worrying, just because little kids can go from "hard to breathe" to "not breathing well enough to get enough oxygen" fairly fast. I'd take a kid to a doctor with chest retractions. If you're in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Tasmania, South Australia or Western Australia you could ring healthdirect on 1800 022 222, in Queensland 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) and they can advise you how soon you need to see a doctor.
no Olive it isn't. Retraction means she's working really hard. Back to the doc asap or the ED would be my advice.

I'll echo what everyone else said. Boytwin has had more than his fair share of chest infections and normally I am able to nurse it at home, but when chest retractions start it is time to go to hospital :hug:

Agreed with everyone else, best to get her checked hun. I was told that coughing like that can be a symptom of asthma too. Iz gets astmatic symptoms when shes got a cold and needs a ventolin to help her breathe. Good luck xoxo
What is her cheast like inbewteen the coughing, if she is working harder when she is breathing in the chest area, this is called chest recessions, and is a sign of respiratory distress, you can also look at the base of her neck, there is a hole there, is the skin there moving in and out (neck tug or traecheal tug) that is also a sign of resiratory distress. But wth the combination of the temps cough etc, I would definitely get her checked out :hug:
Yep straight to doc or hossy. Dd always gets a cough when she gets a runny nose and no one told me what to actually look for to decide to go to the ED. The doc we saw this week actually did...he said the skin on the ribs being sucked in and the skin under the throat gets sucked into the v there iykwim?

thanks for all the replies, shes actually asleep (she had a bad bad day sleep) she only sucks in when its a hard/bad coughing episode and not with normal breathing, if she was at rest i would take her, will see how she goes overnight :(
im worried about croup as she sounds hoarse when she cries when she breathes in at that point it sounds different

last night was average, day sleep very average (20 mins, though i did get her to resettle) but really she ws fine today, tonight not going so well, shes coughing again :( but i think the chest sucking stuff is over

tired lu, tired lol! youd think after alllll the lack of sleep that ive had id be used to this... but nope :lol:

I agree it is certainly sounding like croup, always hits worse at night....
Hopefully she is on the improve, DD has it atm, but we had the Pred at home and she needed it straight away along with her asthma meds, because she was having chest recessions :( We saw he Dr the next morning and he said that the first night is the worst so hopefully she will continue to improve, and that you can manage some rest too xxoo
