Will yoi be expressing? u may not need one so i would wait untill you see if you will
I got a manual pump before DS1 was born. I figured that I would want to express every now and then so I could leave bub with someone else for a couple of hours. If I had needed to express a lot I would have wanted an electric one though, so maybe wait to see whether you will be needing one occasionally or often.
I don't know if i'll be expressing, I guess not if i'm going to be with bub all the time.
It's best to establish BF first anyway isn't it?
Gosh I sound like I have no clue hehe and I actually don't. I'm new to all of this. Don't want bub to get here and realise I'm missing something essential.
I wouldn't waste the money at first- as you may never use it, and then it will just sit there.
Wait untill bubs is here and you work out later if you do need one IMO, then you can decide if you need en electric or a manual etc or not one at all
I bought on on the way home from hossie :)
My DD was in SCN so I had to express whilst she was there. Hubby went out an bought an electric Medela just in case we would need to express at home. It got used so much I broke it as DD refused the boob at 6 wks. Rather than putting her on formula I chose to express all her feeds. So for me having one ready to go when she flatly refused the boob and the MW's couldn't get her to attach either was a godsend.
Everone is different! Do what you are most comfortable with.
i would wait, but if you think you might want one find out where you can get them near you so you don't have to search if you decide you do want one.
You can often hire electric pumps from chemists or the ABA if you need one and dont want to buy one.
Have you thought about doing a BFing class? women s hospitals often run them or the ABA has a list of classes on their website.
I was going to say exactly what Kate07 said. Find out where you can get one at short notice if you need it.
When I had DS2 we went out on day 4 when my milk came in & bought the first one we could find, I needed it desperately to express a bit off the top do he could latch.
When I was PG with DD2 I thought I'd be prepared, bought a pump, - & we ended up full time expressing, so I took it back & got a double electric pump.
You never know what you're going to need, and you might not need one at all.
The other option might be to buy one but make sure you can return it if your needs change.
I bought one today!
Was going to wait until bub was born to make sure my milk would actually come in properly, but there was only one place in town that sold the one i wanted (medela swing) and there was only one on the shelf so i grabbed it so i wouldnt be without if i need it straight up
I just got a manual one before DS was born and I did get a bit of use out of it. You can always sell it!
Personally I'd wait.
I just happened to have one from when Nikita was born (medela swing) but I never really used it. Everyone told me to express to keep my supply up in the early days but I could never see when or how I could when I spent as much of the first 6 weeks sleeping as I could. Plus it would take over an hour to feed DD between burping and what not so I simply couldn't work out WHEN I should do it.
I was stressed out opf my mind because I thought I had supply issues, the MW would tell me to express so Dh could feed the baby too but I would get very very little (between 20-50ml only after 30 min BOTH sides) long story short I gave up ... I mean what was I trying to express for? just because everyone else said to do it doesn't mean you have to, providing you bub gets adequate time at the breast why put that pressure on yourself to express as well? (this was my rationalising for nopt expressing) ....... I also DID NOT have a let down at a pump therefore could not express enough.
So bottom line, WAIT.
You can hire them if you need too but they are not an absolutely essential item UNLESS you don't want to do all the feeds but you will still need to stimulate your supply.
Nae x
I have been given a manual one from my SIL who only used it twice with 3 children.
If she hadn't have given it to me I would have waited to see if I needed one or not. It is going to be handy to have one though just so if I need to go somewhere bubs can still be fed etc...
but I would maybe wait to see if you need one?? Really it's up to you!
Would you feel more comfortable buying one now and having it there just in case or would you feel better waiting and not spending the money if you don't have to?
