HI, I was given a brother sewing machine and have no idea what stiches are good for what. I a wishing to sew the edges of some fabric so that it doesn't frey at the edges. The fabric is bamboo velour which I have cut up to use as wipes and I also bought some bamboo fleece to use as boosters. Both seem to be ok when cut as in they don't frey too much but thought a nice stich around the edges woulf finish them off nicely if the stich also looks nice at the back
Zig zag down the edges to stop it fraying. If you adjust your stitch length it will make it closer together, if that makes sense
That does make sense DB. I am only cutting one layer though so would like the sttiching to also look ok at the back. When I look at the baby beehinds boosters they are sttiched around the edges and it looks nice at the front and the back. What type of sttich would that be.
Sorry if I sound so dumb but I have not sewn anything for over 15 years so have no clue :doh:
ok just done some more experimenting with the zigzag length and width and I think I've got it YAY. Thanks so much for your help
Keep experimenting - your machine might also have an overlock style edging stitch - mine does. If not though, zigzag works pretty nicely :D Have fun!
Thanks Audax, I've found the zig zag is ok but sewing the velour is a bit of a mission as it wiggles around heaps so the stitching is looking pretty messy on my practice piece :rolleyes: I've decided to use them as is and if they start looking yucky from fraying than I will need to revisit the idea of sewing around the edges. The machine does have an over locking zigzag stitch I think but it looked pretty messy at the back whereas I want it to look nice on both sides cause I'm using a single layer. The other thing I need to consider is do I sew around the edge and then need to cut close to the stitch to finish the wipes off because I can't sew right on the very edge of the fabric with any of the stitches I have found so far or is that what an over locking stitch is supposed to do? :confused: OMG I must sound so stupid lol
BAMBOO FLEECE: Ok so now I'm having the sewing machine drama I just want my bloom'n wipes and prefolds to be made already because I've been running out of cloth and have been using too many spossies :wall: so My new question is will bamboo fleece fray anyway and do I really need to sew it? I need them now and don't have time to play with my sewing machine to find a stich that will sew right on the edge and finish off a layer of bamboo fleece or velour nicely.
If you need them now, use them now. Bamboo fleece doesn't fray so much, but it does sort of get runs in it. So you could use them now, and then finish them later.
I've been doing prefolds all day too. Baby has been sticking its little bottom out towards the front - I think it's trying to tell me something!
Thanks hon, I still need to check through all my stiches though to see if any of them can be sewn straight onto the edge otherwise if I need to do zigzag and then trim them close to the edge I will need to cut the fabric a little larger kwim. What are you making your prefolds from? And while I'm at it how long do you think prefolds an covers will work for, I mean as bub gets bigger will they really contain the poops?

Current prefolds are just made out of some cotton terry that came from a local linen supplier, it was their junk. I've also made some out of bamboo and flanno.
I dohn't really know how long you can use them for. Mine are teeny tiny, so don't plan on using them for long.
