Rhymetime and/or Storytime

Just wondering if anyone takes their children to these sessions at their local library?

There are session on a wed & friday that i am interested in going to with BOTH my girls, DD1 would love them and they say they even do a bit of arts & crafts which would be good for her.

DD2 i figure will sit and listen or laugh at all the other kids.

If you do or did go when did you do it, how old were your LO's?
Did you go with friends or by yourself and am i nuts for wanting to let a 2yr old & 10mth old loose in a library?

I would love it if we had rhyme time or something musical here, but there's only kindergym which costs a fair bit.
I've taken DD to storytime a few times, but gave up because she never seemed to realise a story was being read and only wanted to go and pull all the books off the shelves! They only read about 3 stories and then had a craft activity which she is too young to join in with, so I haven't gone back. Once she's old enough to sit and enjoy the stories and do the craft then I'll go back and see how we go.

You can only go one day and see what they are like! You can always not go back if they are too feral :p

Thats what i was thinking, I think DD1 might sit down and listen and she will LOVE the craft, she likes to try and help me to craft at home and i think if we involve DD2 NOW then as she gets older she will be a little more into it IYKWIM.

We have been to both and prefer rhyme time, craft can sometimes be a bit much for little ones. As long as you can amuse your DD2 then I think they'll be fine. I think we'll start going again when DD is a bit older.

I've been taking DS to baby time at our library since he was about 6 months. I've always found it great, but must admit recently it has been getting a bit more challenge. They insist that you keep your child with you (pretty much on you lap) which I'm finding more and more tricky with an adventurous toddler... Ours is really popular and they usually have between 30 and 50 LO's there, so you can understand why, but it is still pretty challenging at the moment. When he was younger, he'd happily sit on my lap and loved the songs and puppets though, so you might find that your DD2 gets more out of it that DD1. But, either way it is a good opportunity to get out of the house and do something a bit different and it costs nothing. I'd give it a go and see how you go...

DD and I use to go to storytime on fridays at 10:30, she was around 1ish. She loved it although she spent most the time standing up and pointing at the story booking going moo ... cow and i kept having to pull her back down.

I went by myself.

We used to go to Tiny's Time at the local library when DD was 6months until she was around one. They read stories & sang nursey rymes. We stopped going when they moved the library for renovations, we'll probably go back once the new library is finished

Thanks everyone, we read LOTS of books at home but i think it will be nice for ME and for the girls to get out and interact, if some of hte local BB'ers can join us aswell would be great.

Our library has different age group sessions. So the younger kids they expect to be noisy wander around abit etc. They do more songs and puppets at this one. Then the 3+ group they expect them to sit better and listen and ours do the craft bit at that age group, usually something related to the topic. We haven't been for awhile. I also discovered our dymocks book shop has them 3 morns a week and offer 20% off kids books during that time.

we used to go to storytime - at a couple of local libraries they have a special 0-2 tinytots storytime & then there's general storytime. we went to the tinytots & DS seemed to like it (although spent a bit of time pulling CDs & books off the shelves) but we haven't been at all this year because it's at 11 & it's always pretty much clashed with his morning nap. it was also quite crowded but they didn't mind the kids wandering around the area they hold it in & they give out maracas for some songs/stories & at christmas did special christmas stories. i'm looking forward to going back :)

I am actually kind of excited to take the girls today, i think DD1 is going to LOVE it and DD2's on the move now so i think a new space to explore will be great for her.
Hopefully they behave and enjoy themselves, i told DD1 were going back to the place with the books and she said YES PEASE... awwwww

I used to take my kids to story time at the local library. Our local primary school also had it, to coax people into going to the school of course but the kids loved it. Our library also has school holiday sessions which I've taken the kids to. They've had a snake handler, crafty stuff, drama etc over the years. The kids used to love it, it was a great way of killing a couple of hours and didn't cost a fortune.

Ours have said they don't do storytime etc over the school holidays, i wonder if they replace it with something else.. will let you all know how we go once we get back :)

I took DD when she was 5 months old - they had a 4 week block of one session per week. We loved it. It was taking her to that which made me think that getting her in the company of other babies was a good idea and I actually met some really lovely mums too and we have set up our own little baby group.

Anyway, it was brilliant and DD knows loads of the nursery rhymes when I sing them to her. It was good for me too, I'd forgotten loads of the ones from when I was a kid!

The girls had fun Ava loved the songs at the start but was a little less interested in the books as she just wanted the shakers back, Z was actually quite interested in the reading and exploring all the other kids.
Then they did some coloring (well we did the coloring) and Ava just wanted to cut out her dog, they got a pin to attach to it to make it's tail wag so now it's on the fridge.
I think we WILL be going back :)

I've been taking M to rhymetime since she was about four months old. :) And she's always loved it. She still loves it now. It says it for babies to 2 years old, but she loves singing and dancing so I still take her now. I haven't tried storytime. They do read a story during rhymetime but she much prefers the songs.

I use to take DS to Rhymetime last year. Our library ran one right before our playgroup session so some of the other mums also went. Eventually, we stopped going because I kept forgetting which week it was on. The library runs it fortnightly.

I went to storytime with my muchkin, ZF and her gorgeous girls. My little one had fun watching all the other kids, attempting to eat the colouring in page and rolling across the floor during the book reading. I think she enjoyed the shaker the most too (almost had a tanty when it had to go back). She was getting a little tired waiting for the songs and so i gave her a BF. Kinda funny the little girl behind me was trying to stick her head in to see what we were doing! Once the singing started my little one was no longer interested in me though :lol:
