Our first cold...

I've been lucky that DD has yet to fall ill in any way, and it seems she has just picked up a bit of a cold.

Yesterday she had a tickly cough on and off, that was breaking a little, and a bit of a runny nose. Quite happy, not feverish and eating/drinking like a champ. She coughed a little on and off through the night but otherwise seems okay.

Today her nose is constantly running clear, she's coughing more but certainly not what I would call a lot, and it's now dry, just seems to tickle her throat. A little bit cuddlier then normal and has already had 2 two hour naps and is down for her 3rd now, when she normally just has 2 a day. Still eating well and I've offered extra BF which she is guzzling down, albiet a bit slower to feed with a snuffly nose. Still no fever either.

I don't think it warrants a doctors visit, but DH is worried and when I spoke with family earlier they think she should go straight to the docs? Am I being too relaxed about it all or are they just being really cautious? I think I'm doing the right thing (but naturally keeping a close eye on her) but you know when the little seeds of doubt are planted....

I had a nasty cold when DS was about 2 months old and I was really sick, but when he caught it he barely complained. The only sign that he was "sick" was the green snots coming out of his nose.

I say that unless bub is having trouble feeding/too sleepy to feed/complaining a lot or seeming uncomfortable or in pain, then really there's no reason for a doctor's visit. If her nappies are wet and she's feeding lots, then what's a doctor going to do? A cold isn't treated with anything other than lots of BM and rest at that age. And if she was older then maybe you'd give her some chicken soup? I don't know why you'd see a Doctor if she seems to be eating/breathing/sleeping okay.

Hope she feels better soon though!

I agree, she is more likely to pick up something nasty from the doctors waiting room if you take her. If she gets a high temperature that panadol doesn't help, or isn't feeding or having wet nappies then definitely take her, but for now she is better off tucked up with you for a few days. Hope she feels better soon.

Do you have a vapourizer? I swear by ours. I still use it now when my kids get a cold :)

Definitely use a vaporiser if she's finding it hard to breath being all blocked up. Give me a holler and I can drop mine round if you want to use that for a few days. :)

My ds had his first cold recently 2 years old. Being breastfed he never got sick at all. luckily I never got sick whilst breastfeeding either. so we have the same runny nose now, but it's nothing to worry about. A doctor canT help a cold anyway :)

The cough is lingering, but she doesn't really seem to be having trouble breathing, apart from when she first wakes and snuggles in for a feed. Then she seems okay. Hopefully she's managed to fight the worst of it off already :crossfingers:
