Allergic Reation to Disposable Breast Pads

Hi All

Not sure if this is the correct place for this but made sense to me.

I am currently 25 and a bit weeks preg and am already having leaking. I have used the disposable pads a few times and each time my breasts get VERY hot and they sting. I have a very bad latex allergy and the box doesnt say what is in the.

What are my other options? I know of the material ones but where can I buy them from and how many am I going to need.

Maz makes them. YOu can also get them from Big W (i think it was from there) or make them yourself using terry flats?

The Nature's Child website has organic cotton ones (washable) or try Mother's Direct.

There could be three options for the reaction, burning etc.

1. You could be reacting to the sodium polyacrylate in them. That's the powdery stuff that turns to gel when fluid is added. It can cause anything from rawness to toxic shock if you are sensitive to it, so if you are reacting be careful with continuing to use them if you think it might be an ingredient thing. It's also one of the main ingredients in disposable sanitary pads and nappies as well, so if you are reacting to this you would or could also react to the sanitary pads (it's been removed from tampons in the 1980's so if you mainly use those then you'd obviously wouldn't react) and bubs might react to sposie nappies when it comes along as they get the initial immune system from us through the placenta.

2. It could be thrush. If you've been leaking a lot and haven't changed them often enough it does become a nice damp place for thrush to grow.

3. Disposable hygiene products named above do normally also contain trace amounts of PVC. It's only a very small amount and you would have to be highly sensitive to have such an extreme reaction (which you might be) but I would be more inclined to think it was one of the other two or perhaps the combination.

There are lots of places that sell them. Maz. The Cloth Pad Shop. Noonee Wilga. Outrageous Cloth.

I can second the Maz pads. Or twinkle Lilly make nice ones.
I used sposies once and hated them. Blergh!

I had the same reaction but I wasn't aware of cloth at the time. I ended up cutting up a couple of hand towels while I was pg because i was only leaking a little. When I was bf I'd use a whole facewasher lol. Next baby I am so ordering some of Maz's because my sis ter said they were soooooooooooooooo comfy!

Grab some Maz ones :D
They're all I wear and they're perfect.
