Toilet training - wearing undies, and accidents in public?

So Jazz is toilet trained. Well training. Well, pretty much trained. She's been 'using the toilet with no nappies while she's awake for a month now.
She even held on and wee'd while we were at the shopping centre in those little toilets in the parents rooms yesterday (first one ever, so cute!).

At home, she only wears a nappy at rest time and at night. Rest time one is almost always dry, and the night time one is 50/50 wet or dry. All the other times she just uses the toilet, no accidents.

We've also been putting her in a nappy while we are out, and mostly she comes home dry. She has called out "WEE" while we have been out, but with no toilet in sight (and no not near our car so the potty in the car wouldn't have helped), we've had to try and get her to wait and, well, she's a kid so when she needs to wee SHE NEEDS TO WEE :lol:

The only thing is, she seems to think undies are nappies. We've been trying to put her in undies (a lot of the time she's just going commando with a skirt or dress on for easy access) but most of the time she wee's in them. Sometimes she wee's a little bit and then stops and runs to the toilet. She hasn't really worked out how to take them off yet, which might be the reason she wee's? Maybe they feel like nappies to her? Is this normal?

And when she is ready for undies while she is out, how do you deal with accidents? What if she wee's on the floor of a shopping centre...? How do you clean it up? Do you take all your clean supplies with you? We don't use the pram, haven't for about 4 months and she just won't sit in it anymore, so we don't take a nappy bag anymore. Should we start again? Or do you just keep putting them in nappies. She really doesn't like being in nappies anymore, she'll fight it and we have to bribe her to put it on. She doesn't like undies much either, but at least any accidents are caught in the nappy.

This toilet training business is tricky...!

I she wees on the floor at the shops just put a chair or whatever over it to stop people standing on it then tell the cleaner/checkout person that 'someone' has peed on the floor over there and beat a hasty retreat. They have mops and stuff to deal with it.

I think the best way to learn how to get in and out of undies is doing it so just put them on and resign yourself to washing lots.

I used to do pre-emptive potty strikes. If I knew we would be out for a while I would ask them to go before leaving and then every time I saw a public loo sign I would ask if they needed it.

YAY!! that is a huge achivement! congrats on getting this far, ive just recently gotten over this problem with ds2, who is 3.5 yrs old.
the thing with the undies, as he told me, is he felt like a nappy was on, untill he weed and suddenly remembered it wasnt one, at home id let him get arround without pants so he HAD no choice but to go the toilet, when he got the hang of wearing jocks, i would constantly stop at toilets when we went out, and tell him to go, even if he just tried and only got a few drops out, we did have accidents, mostly waiting for the bus, i started using pull ups, and reminding him, they are jocks, but if he has a accident, they will catch it. its been a month since we stoped needing "nappy jocks" as he called them, and have been accident free while were out aswell as at home, i still sneak one on him when he is asleep, as its easioer then changing sheets!
As for accidents when at the shops, let someone know as they have mops and all that, most of them understand if you tell them, and get it mopped up quickly, id have a spare pair of undies, and a plastic bag for the wet ones, just so she will learn they are ment to stay dry!

Beth is EXACTLY the same. No accidents with no knickers for maybe six weeks now. But undies? :shakehead: We asked the daycare girls and they said you just have to bite the bullet and clean up a few accidents before they catch on. This morning we were trying out some knickers and the first pair got wee'd on, I caught her halfway through, swung her up on to the potty and whipped them down but they copped most of it. I explained very slowly (again) that they weren't nappies and the second pair were spared - she needed a wee, asked for help and got there in time :D
Unfortunately I think a bit of trial and error is involved.... I was getting very demoralised because I didn't seem to be able to progress from no knickers/ no accidents at home any further while the knickers=nappies equation was still in her head. But I think it will just take a few mistakes before she gets it. Sounds like Jaz is doing great! Unfortunately it has been a bit cold here for going commando out and about (and I don't think I am comfortable with it either TBH) so I am waiting for her to get it a bit before venturing out without nappies. As for cleanups - not there yet, maybe just a few cloth flats in the bag to mop up the worst of it along with a change of knickers/pants?

lol pixie! She's not gonig commando in public, she's a flasher with nappies on, OMG how embarrassing if she was bare bummed!! So it's nappies while we're out! :rofl:

I think it is the feeling of something there, they think they are safe. DD used to pee in her undies, then she started to realise that it didn't hold like a nappy, so I am sure your DD will come to the realisation soon.

I normally ask DD every 10 mins or so till she has actually been to the toilet. And we haven't had any in public accidents.

As for accidents, I have a really small backpack, big enough to hold a change of clothes, and a wetbag, so if there are any accidents, DD can get changed quite quickly. I normally just have a cloth of some description which could be used to soak up accidents, then I would tell someone so they clean properly (I don't believe anyone else should have to clean up aftr my children, but me and DH), not that we have needed to yet.

Glad to hear this is pretty normal though, was starting to get worried about it
