Any advice help full

well this is what we have done....

because she is colic she is really bad with the wind we use gripe water as an aid only but we get most of the wind up with out using it. she is also refluxed. so most times when the wind comes up her feed comes up with it.sometimes we wont be winding her and the feed comes up as well so reflux right. the doc said she is excessive told us to put her on formula, which we did as Lyn was sleep deprived - exhausted. we put her on Novolac reflux, this is to be medicated for reflux, we went this way cause we didnt have a problem winding her just wanted to stop the loss of feed. this enabled me to step in and let lyn get some sleep but to no win the formula didnt work as it massivly played up the acids in Myahs stomach. and the screaming was just ugh... she was in pain... the knees would come up and just ugh... and this was the first night after switching her from the morning.. her stools we really runny and alot of it per nappy change. I realized it was a problem just thought it was because we changed her diet..

3 days went passed and i was living off a couple of hours sleep now you know me i was also working my normal 12 so i was stuffed, Lyn said she would take her that night which she did but i said to her we need to change something it's not right.

So i suggested 1ml Milanta every second feed. she rang the doc to make sure it was ok and he said it was a good idea. this was to try and settle the acids and pain but still had the wind.. guess what didnt work after another 2 days So lyn took her to the doc and he put her on Losec and something else cant remember what it is called.
they are both to help with the acids anyway... this has a very minimal effect so i said to lyn this still isn't right and she agreed meanwhile her stools are way off to what they should be... so we took her back to the doc and he put her on a medicated formula...we thought this was fantastic but guess what didnt work not a bit...

So she rang the Doc and said its not working his reply was well you doing everything you can thats it.

so she told me and i was not happy with that but what do you do right?

so when i got home that night i had a thought and bought Novolac colic... this is the formula Josh was on cause he was as well.
i looked at all the cans we had of different formulas and found that they are all starch based so i am thinking food alergy and slightly lactose as Lyn and her father are.

the colic formula is not starch based and since she has been on it.... alot better.... to lyns plan we feed her more often with smaller doses to help with the winding ... but she still doesnt sleep right but her stools are normal again and we dont think it's the wind keeping her up as there is nothing when we try to console her... she still vomets a fair bit so i am thinking the acids still play up a bit... but she seems settled most of the time now and is quite a happy baby... for most of the day.... but we still think there are settling Technics that we might not know which might make all the difference.

poor little thing, sounds like she is having a rough time. I'm not sure about all the different formulas or medications, my DS was on medication for a while for the reflux, I just cant remember what it was called. I also used infants friend for my son and that seemed to work well.

In terms of settling we found elevating his bed/ bassinette with a towel rolled under the bed helped him get some extra sleep and keep his feeds down. For the wind I use to fill a baby bath with warm water, hold him under the arms and submerge him up to his armpits and just let him kick his lower body away in the water. I did this from about 2 months. It relaxed him and on just about every occassion he would poo,burp or blow bubbles in the water with his bottom. For a while there I was doing this several times a day in conjuction with the burping every couple of minutes of b/f etc.

have you considered going to see a child health nurse instead of a GP, or maybe another GP, or a pead?

hope you find a solution soon, sounds like you and your wife are doing a wonderful job and need some sleep.

Thank you and yes when i refer the word doc i mean paed... I just didnt want to think how to spell it... :lol:

i remembered the other medication now its Zantec ... her bed is elevated almost 45d and a rolled towel under her legs as we found she like to slide a bit hahahaha :lol:

We are both very tired... oh Myah is 6wks old by the way and yes she is the most gorgeous baby in the world (not biased at all).

Lyn is still off on maternity leave but between Josh 3 and Myah we cop it.

I took 2 wks off but am back at work now and it's killing me I work 12hrs a day with 2hrs travel time on top and 1 day a wk off. i dont let Lyn take the nights feed on by herself cause i need her to be there for Josh... it's the one thing she wanted to do finishing up work to spend time with him. So we share it. i dont think it would be so bad if she settled after a feed, of course this is just not happening. It takes nearly 2 hours to settle her and i think thats because she has just exhausted herself. then she is up in an hour for her next feed.
This would be 3hrs if she settled and again just not happening.

Sounds like you're all doing it tough at the moment. If it was me I would be asking the doc for a referal to a paed for further investigation.

The one I have taken all my bubs to has great success with windy and refluxy babies. Sometimes something is out of alignment after birth and it can cause loads of other issues. Paediatric chiros don't actually do "bone crunching", our one is very gentle. I went through hell with my first who was so unsettled for the first 10 weeks of his life. A friend told me to take him to a paed chiro and it was he BEST thing I ever did. DS's shoulder had been dislocated from birth (he was a big bub) and he was in pain. After a few adjustments I had a very happy settled baby :). I have had great success at the chiro with wind issues for my DS2 and DD when they were tiny.

I should also mention, our paed chiro does allergy testing too :).

how long since baby has been breastfeeding? Breastfeeding can continue, and is often the best thing, for babies with colic or reflux.

it can be hard in the early days but it does get easier. Relactation is possible if this is something you are interested in.

She's just 6 weeks old, it's quite possible that the reflux and unsettledness will sort itself out within the next month or so.
How long has it been since your wife breastfed - honestly, it's probably better for her than the formula if she has tummy trouble. Chopping and changing formulas is also likely to cause issues too.
The best thing is to keep her upright after feeds - as long as possible. The easiest way to do this (and this may also help ease her general unsettledness) is to carry her in a wrap so she's nice and snug with mum or dad and upright.

WOW never heard of that... i have mentioned the what if to the current paed and he laughed at me so i shrugged it off..

I will see what happens at this Whispers Cottage as it's booked now.

:angry: i sware if it is the case that something is not aligned i pity the paed i am seeing now boy will he get it from me cause he didn't even give it the consideration.

You won't find many paeds that would tell you to go to a paed chiro because chiros have a natural and gentle approach, whereas a paed will most likely just prescribe meds first (I'm not knocking paeds by the way, they definitely have their place!). I was so upset that the paediatrician at the hospital didn't pick up DS's shoulder problem, it would have saved a lot of pain and tears if it was picked up earlier.

Our DD had severe reflux too, she's on reflux formula now too (& is finally doing well)but I wish I had of kept up the BFing.
Definately go see a pead ciro, You can also try gently tummy massage after her deep bath, that always helped my DD.
Some remedies seemed to make my DD worse before better so at 1st I chopped & changed for ages (I never gave anything a chance to work) until I gave up & went to only massage, deep baths, sleeping position ect.... she was a completely different bub after that until recently we had to change her formula. & now she is great again!
GL, I hope you guys can get it sorted for her asap!

My DD had reflux and was also prescribed Losec. It does take a couple of weeks for the losec to kick in, I'm not sure if your Dr told you that?
Also, I second the suggestion of going to see a chiropractor. That combined with the losec and we managed to have her reflux under control in no time and reduce the losec gradually.
