I have found a nice house to rent, but it has a pool and DF is saying no way due to the extra work and $$'s involved! Just wondering how much your pool costs you and how much extra work it is to keep it maintained? If you pay someone to look after it, how much does this cost you?
We are only looking at renting for the next 6-9 months till we buy somewhere, so i think it would be fine, plus, i would love to have a pool over summer!
Is it up to the tenants to maintain it, or do the owners? In summer, you'll need to get it service/cleaned every week or fortnight. That price varies depending on your area, so give a few companies a call. Also, in summer as you use it more often than winter, chemicals will be more.
For us, it costs us around $30 per quarter on electricity (ours is on a cheaper tarif), every 2-3 weeks we'll need to add some chemicals. Could be $20, could be $50, depending on what and how much you need. When it rains, you also need chemicals. We don't get ours serviced or cleaned by anyone, we do it ourselves, but being a rental, it's most likely in the lease agreement that you will have to get it professionally done.

When we rented out our house we organised for a pool guy once a month to keep it maintained. I think at that stage it was about $30 a month. On the work side, it depends how old the pool is, ours is about 15 years old and a pain in the behind, but the newer ones are self-cleaning and much easier to maintain.
Salt pool - a bag of salt at the beginning of summer, and cleaning it as it needs - ie with a scoop, and maybe a kreepy krawly thing.
The newer ones cost bugger all really.
Chlorine ones are bit more work because you need to get the chem levels right and pay for the chems too. But pool guy once a month or so will sort that for about $50 depending on the company.
In winter they have a blanket on (well, in WA it is law not sure about anywhere else) and the guy comes to clean them once every couple of months.

As Limeslice said the newer ones cost very little to run. We have a saltwater one and DP checks the skimmer basket once a week and cartridge thigo once a month along with the chemical levels. Probably about 20 mins total a month.

There are 2 major brands, Elite and Daisy...can't remember which is which, but one has a bigger bubble - that is the one you want ;)
We have one but DP took it off a few days in winter to evaporate some water. DP stood on it to test how safe it was and it can take his weight. I'll tell him to syphon instead of uncover next winter
we rent a house with a lovely big pool. the cleaning is included in the rent i think we pay an extra $20 a week. but its good cause i can ring them anytime an get the boys to come and do things to it for no extra cost. it did go green the other day casue there was something wrong with the filter but they came out and its probably going to be ok today....i dont think it would be too hard to do yourself....and it is SO nice having your own pool!!!!
