How do I get out of drinking on NYE and make it NOT look like pregnancy?

Hi there everyone!

Well I am 9 weeks tomorrow and we're not intending to tell anyone (except the few I've trusted to tell initially) until after a safe 12 week scan. The only problem is, we'll be staying with family for New Years and a few days after and one of the cousins is pregnant, due in Feb.

When her cousin from the other side was pregnant and before she'd told anyone, my cousin guessed and asked her straight out, just because she wasn't drinking. She will KNOW that I am pregnant if I'm not drinking, but there's no way I'm drinking of course!

Does anyone have any good ideas for
a) pretending to be drinking but not really
b) not drinking and having a good believable excuse - preferred to option a)

I would like to swim while I'm there, so pretending I'm on antibiotics for an ear infection is out, because I'm pretty sure you can't swim with an ear infection.

Any ideas? :doh:

Mm drink orange juice and say there's vodka in it? lol

Ypu could say you have a uti or something lol

Just take the drink and walk around with it in your hand. If anyone asks, you can just say you'll sit on this one at the moment. Tip it out later. No one will know if it's your first or your third. ;)

Or say you're on a new diet to lose weight (you've put on a few kgs recently ;)) that means no alcohol for the month. But you might have to add a couple of other diet-things as well.

Mocktails! Premake them and bring them in your own jug... Then pour into a ****tail glass and hey presto! :D

Can you be the designated driver?

Maybe you could just say you're on a detox? Or you've had a few big ones since Christmas and wanted a sober night because you just don't want to drink tonight. Or you could just say "Nah, not drinking tonight". But then I guess the world would all text each other like that ad that was on TV a few years ago. "NOT DRINKING TONIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" :rofl:

I was thinking about the diet one, but that would mean I can't have anything fatty or sugary... not sure how well I'd do at that :D Could do the walk around with a drink one possibly... I'd have to tell DH beforehand so he didn't yank it out of my hand in front of everyone, lol. Can't do the designated driver one because it's just a family thing staying in a house together so there's only about 8-10 people max and nowhere to drive :) Can't really do the mocktail one cause I'm going there tomorrow and it's a bit difficult logistically.

What sorts of things can I pretend to be on antibiotics for? Maybe a UTI, though that would be quite embarrassing!

I know for a fact that the antibiotics needed for a skin infection cannot be taken with alcohol or they'll make you sick. You're also not supposed to drink a week after taking them so maybe you could say you had a nasty infection on your... Um.. Say.. Leg that has now cleared up but you still can't drink.
Or depending on what you drink you could take an empty bottle (eg beer, cruiser) and fill it with a similar coloured liquid!

I like the antibiotics one. You could say you had an adverse reaction to a mozzie bite and that's why you need them.

One of the girls in my belly buddies group got away with drinking non-alcoholic champagne at her wedding anniversary party. I find that as long as you have a non-empty glass in hand people don't usually question what's in it.

Say you have thrush and have to stay off sugar and yeast :)

Before i knew i was pregnant with our first angel i was out at a pub with people buying me drinks all night. I didnt want to drink (and realised why later) so i just kept accepting the drinks because it would have been rude not to. I just wondered around and left them on various tables and then would have a water as my alternate drink. Just say you're alternating. You can have a sip of bubbles at midnight though (if you want).

I have a bad reaction to alcohol - it burns my tummy so bad after a few sips so you could explain it in something like that. Or Google alcohol allergy - a real condition, and something that can happen even if you used to be able to drink alcohol. :)

I got westcoat cooler bottles and filled them with mineral water, no one was any wiser and easier than the ab option.

Just take the drinks offered and tip them out later, in the garden, toilet etc.....
If you dont say anything, then nothing can be taken the wrong way or seen as a "lie"...

Keeping quite is usually the best way to lie.. I had wine poured at chrissy, sipped it, and it went down the loo whenever I went so noone noticed or said anything..I think I wasted a fair bit!!!
making up a lie, or it being a big deal, usually brings about suspicion!!!

As soon as you arrive, say you're nursing a wicked hangover from the night before, play a little sick and then throughout the day say you're feeling a bit better but still don't think you could stand even a sniff of alcohol after the night you had... At least then you don't have to hide your morning sickness/queasiness all day too, it could actually work well as it would all tie in to the being hungover cover up story :)

My tips using one of the following:

1: On Antibiotics
2: Have a Hangover
3: If you feel like you need to have a drink go the champagne & orange juice option - about 1/10 of the glass bubbles (or less) and then the rest OJ. If it is going to be really hot for your NYE then you could say you don't want to go too hard on the bubbles/alcohol to get dehydrated.

Fake wine and whack it in a real wine bottle. Or just sit on a glass all night.

The more antibiotics etc excuses you make, the more suss people get.
I'd personally take non alcoholic champers in a previously used bottle etc and stick with that all night ;)

We had this discussion just the other day - I am the Designated driver so its much easier for me :)

Could you possibly say you've caught a nasty bug going around and have been having gastro/vomiting? :lol: He had severe stomach cramps too

DF had this tummy bug all last week so it was good for Xmas when I had to avoid all those foods you *shouldnt* have like prawns (as hard as it was tho!) so that was easy to fake!
