using a sewing machine instead of an overlocker

Can it be done? My sewing machine has 30 something stitches so just wondering if I could use one of those instead of buying an overlocker ..... i can post a pic of the different stitches if that helps

I made some nappy boosters out of bamboo material and used a satin stitch which is like a zig zag stitch on the edges, I've been using them daily & the stitch is perfect, no fraying, not coming undone etc.

Yes you can.

Depending on your machine, you should have an overlocking foot. So there are some of those 30 stitches that you can only use with the overlocking foot, and it does effectively the same thing as the overlocker.
They should tell you which is which in your manual, or you can ask you local sewing centre.

Thanks hun I don't have my manual anymore - lost it in the floods :( I know I have a zipper foot but I think that's it I'll have to investigate thank you!!

You should be able to find a copy of the manual via google?
If you don't have the foot I'd just do a zig zag stitch along the edge of the fabric.

That's what I originally thought SS but I couldn't find one it's not a big brand name or anything

Just had a look at my machine and next to the stitches is a pic of a footer (at the top) then a letter next to each stitch (A, R or F) so I'm guessing ones my normal foot the others the zipper and hoping the other is overlocker now I know I don't have this foot but would any overlocker foot fit it or are different sewing machines different?

No they are different, it is an overlocking foot specifically for your sewing machine, not an overlocker foot, itms.

What brand machine do you have?

Lumina signature N190 is the brand and model

Not sure who makes them for Aldi, but you will need to get in touch with them and ask if there is an overlocking foot for them.
You could try Spotlight or even a Janome sewing centre, they *may* be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all your help I might give aldi head office a call next week and see if they can tell me or I could save for a new machine but that will take a while and this one does work well

you could try a satin stitch as someone else mentioned. Satin stitch is just a really tight zig zag stitch. so select a zigzag on abut a 4 width ( you may have to fiddle a bit to get what looks best) then use a stitch length of between 0.5 and 1.0....just fiddle till you get a nic neat looking satin stitch...the exact numbers vary machine to machine......the you can use satin stitch to edge lots of things...the other thing is just to fiddle with a nice zigzag stitch, before overlockers were invented zigzag stitches were used to edge things and stop fraying...HTH

Janome made the overlockers for Aldi, MIL got exactly the same as mine but paid a heap less for it.

Before I had an overlocker I just used a tight zigzag stitch

So do you think they would have made the sewing machines too as that's all I've got??

Have a look for the model number on it & google it, it may bring something up
