Repeating Yr9 for 6mths then doing Yr10 for 6mths

DS15 will be repeating Yr9 this year for 6mths then doing Yr10 for the remainder of the year. We have both been in and spoken to the Principal and she is the one who suggested this be done. My concern is how will he pass Yr10 if he is only doing it for 6mths? I am really impressed with DS though because never thought he would even consider repeating but has taken it in his stride. Most of his mates aren't returning to do Yr10 they are leaving but he really want's to pass Yr10 then look for an apprenticeship in motor mechanics. Has anyone even heard of something like this being done? Any advice appreciated.

i havent heard of this n i was wondering the same thing.. how could he do his certificate if his only done half the work n study?
but i think yr 10 is mainly a revision yr to go over what his learnt n then the exam.. but i could be wrong..
maybe u could have another interview with the prinicipal n get this sorted n see if it really is gonna benfit him or just push him back more??

BG I was thinking a similar thing that maybe he would still need to do another 6mths of Yr10 next year. Once school goes back I will bring this up with the principal, just didn't think of it at the time.

It sounds exceptionally unusual to me... How are they going to pass him through year 10 if he hasn't been attending classes for the required time? How will they expect him to keep up with workload for the second half of the year whilst learning the first semester study load as well? He will miss his mid-year year 10 exams, which do count to final grades...

I would be seriously thinking about what BG has suggested, that this will simply be a way to get him 18 months of year 10, not passing year 9 and 10 in one year. I just cannot fathom how it would even be possible, especially given his issues already last year, he isn't an exceptional student, and not even the most exceptional are allowed to miss half a year and still pass year 10.

I know at my school what is learnt in one semester is usually not needed in the second semester. So say in maths they learn half the topics in the first semester and then the other half of the topics in the second semester. I think it is the same in other subjects such as english and science. And end of year exams and assignments are usually based on the semester rather than the whole year.
But as suggested, speak to the principal and see what would be done to help with the transition and the year following. GL

It could be a possibility of DS doing 18mths of Yr10 but the Principal has not suggested this to me. Initially she said he would do a term of Yr9 then change campus and do Yr10 but the Yr10 electives go for two terms so she said he would have to do 6mths of Yr9. Limeslice, he isn't an exceptional student, his attendance was poor and the principal knows this so I believe she is trying to do what's best for him.

I don't know what its like in Victoria, but in NSW year 9 and 10 are considered to be part of the same stage (stage 5) and there are a certain number of hours that must be completed per year (I think its 100 hours??) before someone can sit the Year 10 exams.

ETA - thats 100 hours per year for English (ie 400 hours by the end of year 10) and a similar amount for other subjects. Unless he was accelerated there is very little chance of doing that in 12 months.
