Serious question though: a friend who is carrying twins water has broken whilst on holiday this morning. The twins gestation is (from memory) 22 - 24 wks.
Being twins what would their survival rate be like???
My heart is breaking for the her and the family :-(
I don't know about the survival rate as I assume twins would be smaller than a singleton. However, a friend of mine had this happen at 21 weeks with a singleton, and even though there was a lot of waters and the midwife said that was it, further tests showed it was only the hind waters that had leaked, so she was kept on complete bed rest and bub was born at 24+3, and has just turned 9 months :) I hope your friend has a similar outcome, sending love and prayers their way :pray:
geebers hun, hope they can keep them in for ALOT longer. amniotic fluid is constantly replaced, so they can stay in there, if they can keep them in there.let us know how she goes xxxx
Multiples are tough hun. My DDs were born at 33+6 and exceeded everyones expectations.
Stay in there, little ones! A friend of mine lost her twin boys in 2009 at around the same gestation... she went into early labour and while the Drs did everything they could to keep them safely in her tummy, they were determined to arrive and sadly passed as they were just too small and weak. She was told that if it had been a singleton, he would have had a chance but because multiples are smaller, they just couldn't be helped :(
I really hope your friend's little ones stay where they need to be, at least for a few more weeks! Good luck to her, I really hope it all turns out well. xx
I have no idea of survival rates at that gestation but I have everything crossed that the bubbas stay cooking for a long time yet.
Firstly, let me put my heart back in my chest you cheeky lady!
Secondly, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, I don't know for sure but I *think* if she were to birth her precious bubbas now they would have a very minimal chance of survival, as the other girls have said, multiples tend to be a lot smaller than singleton pregnancies.

Sooooo, apparently whilst on stop over at the Sydney airport (on their way to a 'baby moon' @ Vanuatu) her waters broke, and very quickly (like by the time she arrived at the hospital) she was 5 cms dilated.
They have given medication which (so far) has stalled labour, and apparently the babies arent distressed and are doing well. They are hoping to keep them inside for at least another 4 wks (in Sydney) and then will re-assess.
Having had a prem baby before, not twins though) I can't even bear to imagine the logistical nightmare they are facing! Transporting prem babies interstate - I wonder how that'll work. The extra long stay at the hossy.....BUT good news is - the boys are doing great still!

oh gosh..have everything crossed they stay put for a little while longer!
I hope they can keep their babies in there! I am an hour from Sydney, is there anything they need? Do they have any family in Sydney. Please let me know if they need anything, I'm on hols from work and it would be easy to help out if needed.

If the gestation is before 24wks often docs wont resuscitate.. 24wk twins have a survival rate of around 40%.. I will hold your friend in my thoughts and hope like hell those bubba's stay put :(

With steroids and extra time in the womb, their chances get better and better. 1 day in utero = 3 days in SCBU (if that makes sense)
i had my waters break at 23wks with my first DS (i also haemoragged til i had him ) and went into labour but they managed to stop it and had to stay in hospital until i had him i managed to keep him in til i was 30wks the only way they would deliver was if i got an infection he is now 6yrs. Dont know if that helps in any way i had to stay in brisbane and he was transferred back to tweed hosp at i think 4wks
Oh, that must have been so scary for your friend but at least they were still on Australia Shores when it happened and not somewhere over the pacific. I know that they don't like twins to come before 28 weeks, so hopefully they can do everything to get to that stage. I know someone who delivered her twins boys at 28 weeks and where in the SCN for 12 more weeks but they didn't need resuscitation when delivered and they both went home healthy with no complications.
I'm sending your friend good strong growing baby vibes and I hope everything works out for her.
I hope the bubbas stay put a while longer, thinking of your friends.
