I just went to renew my registration tonight on the new system.
Now I have been out of the nursing loop for a long time and had to look up half the new terms but I had to tick NO for the recency of practice question (obviously - haven't nursed for over 5 years). It then says my registration will be assessed.
So my question is - what if they don't renew it?
Does that mean I have to go back to uni if I ever want to work in Nursing again?
I think you have to do a refresher course. The major hospitals used to advertise them all the time. But I strongly doubt you would have to go back to uni.
I do have to do a refresher anyway, but if they cancel my registration then will I have to earn it back? The only way you used to be able to do that was uni.
Not a huge deal, I'd just do something else, but it's always been nice to have that as a backup.
I thought that was how you earned it back, doing the refresher course. I must work in the next couple of years then :)
No idea, but logic would tell me that perhaps you may not be able to actually get it renewed UNTIL that course is done? and if you don't pass it maybe you have to do another more intense refresher course? :dunno:
But then the government isn't very logical now is it? :lol:

eta no Hope, it isn't. We used to be able to just keep our registration current though, and now it's changed....
If it is like Teaching you will have to a certain number of professional Development (PD) hours anda certain number of practical hours to get re registered.....i think te practical stuff is semi supervised stuff.....
Kim I have been looking into it because I havent worked for 2.5 years. If you havent worked for more than 5 years you have to do a refresher course and pass that in order to be re registered. Then once thats happened, you have to do at least 20 hours a year of professional development which is mandatory. i am not sure how many hours you need to actually work per year to keep it up or if you have to for the new system. Its all kind of confusing. They are going to be apparently strict with the auditing of the pd though. HTH....
I want to go back to work but I dont want to go into mental health anymore...its the only thing i have done since graduating since 1999. Any suggestions for a good area to go into?
Melissa- Maybe try Agency work or Bank work somewhere and see if any specific areas interest you?
Kim-Yeah what Melissa said above, they prolly hold your rego til you complete the refresher course.
Thanks girls. I rang and spoke to them as I didn't want to pay it if it was going to be knocked back. They just said everything you guys did so all that's changed is that I pay less lol. I'll get a refund from the full price when they knock me back.
Does anyone know the BPAY details? the code and then is it just your registration number as a reference? I've tried to ring all week but got cut off or on hold for and hour (which DS is never really pleased about somehow :dunno: lol).

Sorry cant help you with the bpay thing... I dont even know where I put my paper work!!! And my brain doesnt reach that far back!
I graduated from VUT in Footscray in 1999. I went straight into my grad year doing mental health. I only wish now that I did half med/surg and half mental health. I really enjoyed the thril of mental health when i was younger and had no kids...now its a different story. I have had so many incidents that I dont think I could do it anymore. I dont really want to go back to work but I feel I should because I dont want to waste all that study. I wouldnt have a clue what else to do. I was thinking maybe I could study more and do teaching or maybe ..... I dont know! AAggg. What area did you work in?
ED and peadi theatre were my specialities. Would love to go back but I've been in the cops so long, it's a bit scary. I know what you mean about the feeling towards it pre and post kids. That was ultimately why I resigned from the cops. I just couldn't do it anymore. But you're right. I worked so hard to get all that and now what :dunno:
Teaching has crossed my mind too. I know lots of nurses that have done the two year conversion.
I might look into that....

Where abouts are you... as opposed to the middle of nowhere?
