Your 9 month old - how many naps?

I'm really struggling with DD's sleep at the moment. It would seem she doesn't need any :o

How many naps did/ does your 9 month old have/ need?


DD seems to have a good sleep in the morning (from around 10-11am) and then again in the afternoon (any time from 3pm onwards for half an hour). But I've been finding that if she sleeps later then it's almost impossible to get her to sleep at bedtime (no matter how early or late the bedtime is).

I'm going to try the rule that if she hasn't had a nap by 3.30pm then I'll just stretch her out until bedtime. We're doing this today and she's doing ok (for now).

She's a nightmare to settle at the moment but is teething big time.

I'm pooped! (and so is she but she just can't see the wood for the trees just now).

Any suggestions? Or advice? Or hugs?????????

DD was having 2 naps a day but has always been a very poor daytime sleeper, so 2 of 45 minutes at 9 months of age. It certainly does seem at times that these tiny little beings just simply do not need to sleep :wall: I dont have any advice but wanted to offer the hugs and info on DD at that age, hang in there :hug:

DD was having 2 naps a day at that age.....around 9:30am and then around 2:30pm....(from memory!) BUT I remember having to ensure her 2nd day sleep wasn't too late in the arvo otherwise yeah it was hard to get her to bed....that rule still applies today even with just 1 day nap now.

DD transitioned around 12mths/13mths to 1 day nap.....

I remember 9mths of age was a very difficult age with sleep!! and she was waking ALOT at night time too! Particularly because of her teething!!!!! :o

Today my LO was up at 8.30am. looked tired at 12 but wouldn't go to sleep (despite trying 4 times) until 4pm. slept until almost 5. she has just had dinner bath and now feeding (hopefully) to sleep. wish us luck

DS was a shocker of a day sleeper up until the last couple of weeks. from around 3 months until 11 months old he would have 2-3 half hour naps per day. he didnt sleep thru the night until he was 4 months old and that is on and off still. most nights he will sleep thru others he might wake up have a bottle then settle again. at the moment he is now having an hour sleep in the morning, and a two hour in the afternoon. i wouldnt worry too much about it, she will sort herself out again soon. it really is hard and i can only offer hugs to you. i hope things start improving for you soon xx

Do you know our girls have now been out in the world for as long as they were in our tummies? crazyness!

MummaSue, big hugs hun. My wee man decided that he doesn't really need an afternoon nap anymore.......if I put him down any later than 4 pm, he won't go to bed until sometimes 9.30-10. So these days if he hasn't slept in the afternoon, I try and stretch him till bed time. It sometimes means going to bed earlier than his normal 8.30 pm bed time, except that he tends to wake up during the night and find it hard going back to sleep (over tiredness). He's always had sleep issues during the day. At best, he would sleep an hour from say 10.30-11.30 in the morning and then for 30-45 minutes around 2.30. That was a few months ago. Now we seem to have the new improved (not for me, for wee man - more play time, yaaaaaaay!!) sleeping times during the day. And, no teething here!!!!! GL hun, hope your wee princess catches that little sleep before 3 pm!!

Not enough.

I read somewhere between five and 11 months babies only need 9 to 12 hours sleep in a 24 hr period. Dunno how true it is but it was and is the case around here.

at 9 months was having 2 sleeps but I remember having problems getting him down. I found that moving around his meal times helped heaps, as with the activities I was doing with him. (should say that he wasnt on full on meals obviously but he was still having small ones and breastfeeds). I was giving him morning tea before his first sleep and lunch before his 2nd. For us we found all that did was give him an energy high when he couldnt handle it. I still gave him the breastfeeds before nap time, but gave him the food after he woke up, we found that really help get him down easier. hope you get some relief soon.

I KNOW :o :o :o My mum was asking me yesterday what she should get for her 1st birthday. I told her not to because my baby isn't going to be turning one. EVER. She's my BABY!

Thanks for your responses guys. It would seem that 9 months is a difficult time from what you all say and I am certainly finding that to be the case, with sleep and a few other things.

Yesterday we stretched her out. DH took her for a walk after dinner and he came home with a sleeping baby in the ergo :o That was at 6.30pm and she is STILL ASLEEP! She woke in the night for feeds but has pretty much been asleep since then. When she wakes for feeds, it's a quick nom nom nom then back over (usually).

Hmmmm...... DH is thinking that a walk after dinner and bath might be the way to go - we'll see. The wee rascal changes things so frequently that this will work for a few days and then it won't.

It's very true MummaSue, what works one day is not guaranteed to work the next. I've taken my DS for a wee walk in the late afternoon before dinner a few times and sometimes he goes down a lot easier and sleeps longer when the time comes for bed. It might be the fresh air that does it I think. It might be worth trying it out. You could try a walk before dinner and bath or after dinner but before bath??

Wow, cant believe our 'babies' are 9 months ...well Ryan isnt yet but he will be in 4 days.

Things are very much the same over here at the moment too.
Ryan has just cut a top tooth and i dare say in the next day or two the one beside will poke its head out too, he has been waking up very frequently every night for about a month now to be honest. Like you getting him to settle and into bed at night is taking a while - usually on the third attempt i succeed. He has never really been a huge day sleeper although that said he has been asleep on my lap now for about 2.5hrs i'm going to wake him at 3.30pm and see if we have an easier time tonight too.

Just want you to know your not alone, we will get through this it's just a phase that will pass soon :)

i took your advice and popped my monkey in the Ergo and went for a walk today. She had about 30 mins sleep and another 45 mins or so of rest. Hoping she will now stay awake until dinner and go to bed early.:crossfingers:

Finally got her down. Hopefully she will sleep for a couple of hours before she wakes and comes into my bed. DH first night shift for awhile, gotta get used to them again.
