Advice on making curtains

I want to replace the curtains we have in the campervan but am wanting to know if this is something I can do without a sewing machine. They don't need to be a heavy material, I've seen a patterned cotton that I like and all they need to do is be stitched so they can hang over an elasticised rope thing that then hooks onto the camper. The rope sort of threads through the top of the curtain like a drawstring would in pants, ITMS.

Is it insane of me to think I can just hand stitch them and they won't fall down? Any tips will be greatly appreciated :)

What are those round things called that you hammer on? (the ones like on the edges of tarps) You could put those across the top and thread the curtain rail through that.

you would still need to hem the material.. unless youw ant to go for the frayed rustic look ;) i guess you could hand sew but it would probably take awhile!

If you didn't want to hem the material you could cut it with pinking shears.

if you have alot of patience and a thimble you can hand sew anything :lol:
I hand stitched the dogs blankets together(two smallish ones to make a big one) took me a while but its still holding together 6 months later
or hemming tape? iron on stuff (mums suggestion)

Hmmm, didn't think of the hem. Maybe the hemming tape will be the way to go.

You could get some of that cheap lace curtaining, people often trim that and it doesn't fray too much. I'm sure you can get some kind of iron on hemming tape, and I also wonder if there's some online shop selling curtains for caravans?

Yeah, I used some lace in the house but wanted something for the camper that isn't see through at night. I'll have a google though, see if anyone has anything bright and cheery. Why is it in campervans/caravans it has to be plain, dull and boring decor!?

I have a sewing machine if you want to bring the materal over and hem it here.

My Mum wrote a letter to the editor - I think it was Caravan World, about 18 months ago, saying something along those lines, that especially Australian manufacturers are just churning out the same old interior layouts and decor.

HotI (have to get used to writing that :) ) Thanks for the offer hun, I think I'll be okay. I'm going to give it a go with the hand stitching first, but if it fails, I'll come for a visit :)

Emc2 - The entire van is beige. Blergh. We're talking about painting the cupboards inside, brighten them up, do the curtains and then over time, get the cushions reupholstered. Make it a happy cheery place! It's a really old camper, but in really great nick (inside anyway), but it needs a freshen up.

I have used hemming tape on our curtains in our house and it is working just fine. I would suggest putting a stitch in the corners though just so it doesn't start coming away. I think you would be fine to hand stitch the top and use the tape for the sides and bottoms.
