DD has a temp and Im worried shes weaning :(

So after my post a few weeks back about DD going to 2 feeds instead of 3, Im back! Quick post (hopefully)
Ive always had way too much milk and not a super hungry baby and was engorged daily till at least 10 months so Im not getting very worried. DD is sick, she teeths horrendously and the poor little mite has had a temp of over 40 degrees, heading towards 41 degrees for 3 days now :o but still no teeth. Day 1 had 2 feeds, yesterday 1 feed and gagging when I offered :( and so far today NOTHING, I offer and she just starts to cry. She is eating a small amount of food and drinking loads of water. I am not engorged at all and Im a little worried she is gonna wean....do you think she might? How long will I have a good supply left for when she does go back? If she does? :(

Wow, that is a high temperature. How is she otherwise? Do you think she may be ill, rather than (or in additino to) teething? Perhaps she has an ear ache or sore throat that will put them off feeding sometimes.
Your supply will be fine, you'll make as she demands as always.

Thnaks MadB :hug:Ive just never been so long without feeds and no engorgement, its a shock! It is a ridiculous temperature :( She is fine in all other ways perhaps more tired but too hot to sleep. I did think it was something other then teeth but this is the 3rd time since OCtober and I have taken her to the hospital. The best they could say is water, cool washers and panadol and just be aware she may have a febrile convulsion :o so that really puts my mind at ease! She got this temp only the once before her first 6 teeth cut at once and has been getting her molars and eye teeth since October but they just wont cut through :( Im so worried about her, shes just bright red for days on end.

Teething does not generally give fevers that high. I would get her throat and ears checked again with a temp of 40+ and pain / distress on sucking or swallowing. Particularly after 3 days. Even if she is drinking well.

Febrile convulsions occur through rapid changes in temperature, not the actual height and only in those children who are sensitive to the changes (family history is one indicator) At 16 months they feed for many reasons so there is no reason to expect she will wean. It just sounds like it hurts her ATM.

Thanks heaps for the info on febrile convulsions, thats s bit of a relief. The Dr just said watch her and it got me a bit scared!

Mmmm, that I know but there are a very small handful of children who get geuinely sick when they teeth and DD is one of them. I have researched this cause I did honestly think I was missing something...anything! She started cutting teeth at 4 months and then didnt get any through until 10 months. She has had the same temp with no other symptoms except not wanting to feed 3 times since October :(

I hope she's feeling better soon - I've got no idea, just keep an eye on it.

I dont think it sounds like she is weaning, just that she is really sick. Any chance you could try expressing and giving her some milk that way, since she is taking water ok. Also any chance of taking her to get a second opinion on the temp - 40/41 for 3 days it quite high, teething or not - are you giving her any panadol or anything like that to try and combat the fever? Can you see if any teeth look like they are trying to break through? If you cant I would think it would mean it is something else that is wrong.

Hope she feels better soon, dont worry about your supply, it will build up again when she goes back to feeding more regularly.

have you tried tag teaming Neurofen and Panadol to get her temperature down? It is much more effective than just Panadol.

Usplus2- yep, all those teeth (molars and eye teeth and some others) are all sitting just below the gum, pushing down but not cutting iykwim. Its like it I cut the gum they would all just come straight down...does that make sense?

Beema- yep Im tagging nurofen and panadol. The panadol seems to help with the temp (normally) and I find nurofen soothes her teethies more.

So right at this moment...we got a smile :dance: she seems a bit cooler. She has had 2 milk feeds and after just havinf a small fight with her I have put bonjela on. Her gums are bright red and the gums betweens her top 4 teeth are bulging out past her teeth. Her lips are swollen a little too, this happens all the time! I was starying to wonder if she had an intolerance to bonjela but it has happened without it on occassion :dunno:

The Dr is at the hospital tonight (small country town) so I may take her for a 2nd opinion. Its a little sad here, if you take your kid up there and not to the Dr surgery they tend to think you are someone who is abusing the system and doesnt want to pay for an appointment and treat you like you are some 'unworthy mother' iykwim. makes me so angry :shakehead:
