Hi all,
I am trying to go for a VBAC this time around as DD was breech and very sick so had no choice but a c section,
The question I have is....... If needed i have been told I can not have any pain relief, but have heard of other hospitals doing this.... Is that right??
Also does anyone have any tips for turning a baby from the breech position, this baby has been head down since 24weeks and has decided now to turn breech!!!! willing to try anything to avoid another c section.

as for the turning side dr's can do a manouvre that can try and turn them but they usually wont worry till about 36 weeks ( may be wrong)
apparently the manouvre isnt painful but can be quiet uncomfortable..

You could have gas and probably pethidene (as far as i am aware, but hospital policy might be different) but certainly not an epidural because they like you to be able to feel what is going on in case of rupture.
Yeah I think it's more the epidural thing cos of the "rupture" thing. I can recommend hypnobirthing for a VBAC though. You do "pain relief" through breathing and natural endorphins etc.

Although I have read a few VBAC stories of women who have had an epi, but I wouldn't have one if it was me.
As for turning a breech baby, check out optimal fetal positing on the spinning babies website. You can also try a chiropractor who knows how to do the webster technique. Accupuncture can work too. Or sit in a nice warm bath and put a cold pack or frozen peas where (or close to) the head is. The baby won't like the cold so it will head to the warm. I know of a woman who did this at 40 weeks to turn a breech baby successfully!!
I had the water injections, I tried the gas but it made me feel sick, and after 36 hours I had a self-doping epidural without issue. With a posterior baby it was the lesser of two evils because it helped me relax which put less stress on the uterus. I was able to stop administering the epi so I could feel to push. Women who haven't had a c-section but are induced are just as likely to rupture (if not more so) and that doesn't stop them from having epidurals, it just means you have to be constantly monitored. Studies have shown that an epidural on the lowest dose doesn't stop you from feeling a rupture anyway. Most hospitals policies state that being a VBAC isn't a contradiction to an epidural, so if someone is saying that it is (like an OBgyn) that's because THEY don't feel comfortable with it.
I was allowed an epidural, the anaesthetist was there trying to get it in when i started pushing though! I was not concerned about rupture, the likeliness of it happening is actually quite small and there are other indicators which are being monitored so i was happy to take the risk.
