I have a little piggy :) How do I know if she is full???

Hi all!

Amelia is now a week and a half old. My breasts seem to be producing a lot of milk and little miss will just keep feeding and feeding (I know she's getting milk as she is constantly gulping) to the point where her stomach is bulging (last night it became almost rock hard:o) which then ends in her vomiting numerous times (last night a bit of projectile vomiting was included in this)..... Initially she seemed to be showing signs that one side was 'empty' so I was offering the other side, but over the past few days she never seems to finish one side, even after 20+ minutes!

So my question is, how do I know if she is 'full'?? I mean, I don't want to take her away if she is still hungry, but I also don't like to see her vomiting so much.......

I had a piggy to and I had to take him off the side he was on and burp him really well before offering again. If he was really hungry then he would accept but if he wasn't then he'd play. Try that and see what happens. My DD used to drink so much as well that she would projectile vomit. I did the same thing. Had to take her off and burp her then offer again. Good luck

Congratulations on your little one. It sounds like you are doing really well already!

I think you'll find that this will settle down itself in time. In the meantime though, it is ok to take her off after 20 - 30 mins of solid sucking - babies usually get the majority of the milk in the first 20 minutes. Then you can do a nappy change and burp and offer the other side. Soon your supply will settle down and she will also be able to feed more quickly. By 3 months many babies are finishing a feed in under 5 minutes and believe it or not your breasts will stop feeling full between feeds. It's all good, that is "normal", not a sign of low supply!

Thanks for the advice Manta. TBH, over the past couple of days I've been taking her off after every 5-10 mins for a bit of a burp, to a total of about 20 mins feeding. It is usually about this time that she has a small vomit and I've been a bit worried about offering the other side in case we get more projectile vomit which usually includes it coming out of her nose (which, understandably, distresses her a bit). As a result, I haven't been offering the other side.....I know I should but she doesn't seem to be 'asking' for it and still has lots of pooey and wet nappies so I am hoping it is ok......

Don't worry about what you 'should' be doing, if what you are doing is working for you and your little one. My LO only took one side til about 3 or 4 months and was happy and healthy.

My guy only took one side at a time until this week! It's only now he's starting to take both and he's 5 months old :) Like you said, she still has heaps of wet nappies, I'm sure she's getting enough.
DS was the same as your LO for a while with the vomitting, I did the couple of burps per feed and it settled down.
