Studying Chinese (Mandarin)

Hi Ladies,

As you know, I'm living in China now, for 2 years (probably more - but don't tell my parents that).

Well, on Tuesday, I start my Chinese Language Classes & I'm freaking out!!!!!!!

I'm doing 5 hours per week & eventually am meant to be able to 'read' Chinese characters. I'm flipping out about that part!

Plus, there are FOUR tones in Chinese, so potentially the same word can have 4 different meanings! Arrrggghhhh

Has anybody else studied Chinese??? If so, I need to hear from you & I need some reassuring words.

Hi Jane I studied mandarin when I was in yr 11 because I was interested in my origin language.

Anyway, make sure you learn the pinyin with every word. It makes it so much easier to remember the pronunciation
Also each character can b broken up into smaller characters such as a pond will contain the water character on the side but this only applies if u are studying traditional Chinese and not simplified. Anyway Chinese is so interesting youll love it.

Mum2OSB _ Thank you so much! The course I'm doing is apparently dedicated to correct pronunciation - they are really tough on ensuring you have the tones & everything perfect before you move on! It will take me a month to get through Ni Hao Ma I think!!! bahahah
