Kids in a campervan? Tasmania!

Hi! We're planning to go to Tasmania for 2 weeks straight after Christmas this year and are thinking that hiring a campervan could be a good way to get around. Our girls will be 6 and 4 (birthday while we're there!). Anyone done this?? Any tips or traps?? :dunno:

Also, what are the "must see" places in Tasmania? Rough plan at the moment is to fly into Hobart for a couple of nights then do a loop around the state in the van for about 10 nights. We have a few brochures but not much aimed at kids, so we're particularly looking for things they'll really love.

Hopefully we'll have our best friends with their 2 kids (same ages) travelling with us so it should be lots of fun!!

Sounds like fun! I haven't been around Tassie, but some friends have with their kids in a campervan and they had a great time :).

In September/October of last year we took our 3 kids on a 6 week trip from Melbourne to Perth (and back) towing our caravan, we had the BEST time!

One thing to think about with a campervan is that once you have set up camp, if you want to go for a drive around to tour the area, you have to pack everything up again, then re-set up when you get back.

Wings wildlife park is good its also a camp ground its on the Northwest coast

I know that the zoo near riverside in launceston kicks butt over the zoo near mole creek.

I don't really get out to see much of tassie unfortunately lol

Tasmazia and the village of lower crackpot (I think it's called that) - lots of fun for big and little kids - google will tell you more :)

A friend and I had a ball there about 6 years ago.

Subscribing because we want to do this too! Our plan is to come in by boat, then spend a few days in/around Strahan, then down to Hobart, up to Freycinet and then to Launceston before going back to the boat. We want to spend a few days in each spot to explore. We've just got our camper, so we're watching the boat prices (going to cost a bit to get us over) so will be interested in seeing where you go! It's been over ten years since I was there, and DH has never been.

There is also the tahune airwalk and the dismal swamp 110 metre slide

Have to go through all those great suggestions to finalise the touring itinerary, but first step is to get some accommodation in Hobart. I knew the Sydney-Hobart would complicate things, but didn't quite realise that people booked their accommodation YEARS in advance :o :o Is anyone familiar with the Lenna or the Mercure Hobart?? These seem to have rooms available, not much else around.

Aligater, my DH has already ruled out the air walk - he hates heights!! Might have to go with my girlfriend and leave him with the kids :D

The only place I have stayed in Hobart is the tourist park near the airport. We had a cabin and it was cheap, clean and comfortable. Not sure if that helps at all lol

This is more for the kids,
I was 8yo when my parents took us on a 6 month world trip which started with 12 weeks in an RV (american campervan) driving around the states. To keep us occupied we had heaps of colouring/activity books, books, toys etc... and dad played games with us like having a list of things we had to spot and the first one to cross them all off one something at the next stop. This was all before electronic toys, portable dvd players etc (1995) and we were fine with it (for the most part! 12 weeks is pretty long to an 8yo!!!)

Tassie has lots of cool stuff for kids - we were there early last year. Try a harbour cruise in Launceston, a visit to Cradle Mountain (even when the weather is off it is amazing, even from the car park), Wings Wildlife Park (as mentioned above), the Salamanca Market in Hobart (Saturdays), the museums and galleries everywhere. Buy a copy of The Entertainment Book (google it) and you'll find it pays for itself in no time.

Ive heard the mercure can be a bit unclean dont know if they have improved lately though
