Hi girls just wondering if anyone has any advice on whether we should do IVF or ICSI for our cycle next week? The FS and Scientists have said they now believe IVF is better as we dont have sperm issues as we are using donor sperm from the states and that is generally pretty good quality.
Just curious to find out about other peoples opinions or experiences!

Sorry I dont know which is better, we have only done ICSI as DH has major sperm issues :(

we did ICSI as part of our IVF protocol because my DHs sperm were misshapen, lazy and swimming in the wrong direction. So we needed that extra help of having the sperm put into the egg.
But if the swimmers you have know what they are doing, sounds like you won't need that extra procedure.
I think its horses for courses. and neither guarantees results iykwim.

We did ICSI because we had to but given the chance I would have tried straight IVF first. From what I have read (limited, because it just served to make me anxious and it was pointless to keep researching as I didn't have a choice in treatment) there may be a higher risk of birth defects associated with the process of ICSI. Every FS has a different opinion though so it's worth checking with yours.
My clinic also charges extra for ICSI so if yours does that may also be a factor for you.

Hi hun, we did ICSI as our FS wanted us to get pg asap because of our ages AND I had a pretty impressive fibroid growing in my uterus so time was of essence. I was 38 when I did my cycle. There was no issue with me (apart from the fibroid) and DF had a failed vesectomy reversal, but when they went in with the needle they found enough swimmers in there. There was no issue with DF's swimmwers quality. GL hun!
ICSI is what i did cause DS swimmers are trapped due to vas so if swimmers are ok normal IVF would be fine.

We did a combination of IVF and ICSI as I had so many eggs collected (30 in total) so my FS did a 50/50 split as we had no sperm issues- 15 were left to there own devices with IVF and 15 had ICSI. Of the 15 IVF ones we had 13 fertilise and the 15 ICSI we had 5 fertilise of the 18 fertilised we had 15 that matured - I don't know if it was the IVF or ICSI one's that didn't grow.
My FS chose both options just to see which would work better for us and it appears that in our case letting nature "take it's course" so to speak with IVF was a better result for us for fertilisation rates.
WE did a split too as DH's sperm quality was not good. There wasn't much difference in fertilisation/survival however.
If quality is not good and/or there's an issue with quantity then you might want to consider it. It is an extra expense of course.

Just went throught the whole ICSI versus IVF saga. Lying in bed after an EPU of one, the lab manager strongly urged I do IVF. Im using donor Xytex sperm which is excellent quality. She said the lab has been running a lot of analysis which shows for women over 40 to definitely NOT use ICSI. There is the chance of damaging the egg, or even completely shattering it. They said that ICSI was designed for sperm issues, if you dont have them, and your egg quality is iffy as part of your age, then dont use it. This will now become the trend apparently. My egg took almost 24 hours to fertlise but the little buggers finally cracked that hard stubborn old egg. It was a tough decision for me, but Im glad I made it, and now Im praying for the next 14 days its going to work.

Thanks for the info on ICSI hun, I will definitely talk to my FS about it when I'm ready for my cycle....he just loooooooves ICSI......hmmmm....
We used ICSI with all our cycle but this is due to my DH's sperm that dosn't swim :( iv heard they are using ICSI alot more now, better fertilisation results? but if the sperm is healthy then IVF is prob the way to go. Good luck. If you dont mind me asking how much does it cost for donor sperm??
Thanks girls i am really not happy today as epu yesterday had 11 then only 8 where able to be injected and 1 has fertilised the rest dont look too great....
as we are using donor sperm from Xytex so it is good quailty they come in vials and we use half each time so we have a couple that havent been used which is only frozen once and 2 that are half so have been frozen twice.
We went in after having this discussion with the FS that we where doing half/half.. When i come out from my epu they then tell me they have thawed a half vial which as it has been frozen twice can only be used for ICSI. So cranky with them as they didnt ask me and it was our decision yesterday but we would have to throw out the vial and go to waste.
On every other occasion they have used a fresh one means frozen once which i would have thought would be better quality and as ou results have come back so bad this time i am just so upset with them.
Trying to be positive for the little lone one and hope it keeps progressing but my god its hard to stay positive.
