Am I doing the right thing?

DS has had a potty for some time, likes to sit on it after his bath or use it as a seat through the day. He hasn't done a wee in it for a while but usually gets up to stand next to the potty to wee :lol: He always lets me know he has done it on the floor & will usually try to clean it up!

Yesterday after his bath he ran around nude for ages & I noticed he was stopping, looking down & kind of pushing wee out. Did this heaps of times! He found it quite fascinating of course :lol:

Today he took his nappy off (MCN) & did a wee on the floor. I tried him on the potty & toilet but he wasn't interested so I put the nappy back on. He took it off again & has been running around nappyless for hours doing little wees every so often. He clearly knows when he is about to do it, or knows to 'let go' to make it come out.

I guess my question is: am I on the right track? Is it okay to let him just go where ever & whenever he likes? Or should I be encouraging more potty/toilet use?

If you are ok with cleaning it up, I would be inclined to let him go, but if you can catch when he is about to go, direct him to the toilet.

I used to just tell DD that she is meant to wee in the toilet after she wee'd on the floor (never yelling at her, just explaining that we do wees in toilet not on floor).

If you are happy to clean it up I don't see the problem. It's good that he is comfortable peeing without a nappy, and he will probably want to have a go in the potty soon enough. If it helps I bribed DS1 with chocolate drops (the tiny ones you use for baking) to get him to try the potty and once he realised it was easy he was happy to use it all the time.

Thanks for your replies girls! I am happy to clean it up, it's mostly on the tiles for now. I tried to stick the potty underneath when he was about to go a couple of times. He just shoved me out of his way :lol: He did go & sit on it on his own but didn't wee those times.

Will keep doing what we're doing :D
