anyone know about mixed race baby hair care?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this..

My baby has very curly hair, it's like ringlets on top of his head when it's wet. When it dries it stays like that for a very short time then goes fuzzy.. usually its just fuzz and just sticks up everywhere. He is mixed race (half African half white) and his father has the really really tight curls which you either have to keep shaved or in braids. Anyway bubs hair looks like a huge mess like I leave him with bed hair all day or something. Am I supposed to be washing it? I haven't washed it with shampoo yet, just rinse with the soapy bath water. How do you stop it from going fuzzy and messy?

I have super curly hair, I find combing or brushing it when its dry makes it worse. Also over washing it causes a lot of fuzz, unless he's got food or something in his hair I would only wash it with the bath water once a week.

I don't think there are many options with him being so young, sorry.

cool thanks. I'm not someone who uses hair stuff so I wouldn't put anything in bubs hair anyway, so I will try not rinsing it in the bath water. That makes sense about over washing it, it will probably give his scalps natural oils a chance to stop the fuzz if I stop rinsing it. Thanks :)

I use a leave in conditioner on my boy's hair and DH uses a hair moisturizer for his afro.
You can use one of the baby shampoos at his age but you don't need to use it often.

thanks Onyx, I've only just started using a baby shampoo, and I'm going to stop rinsing it with the soapy bath water every night and just wash it with the shampoo once a week instead. He still has baby hair on the top, the sides are fine but the top just looks like such a mess. Just fuzz that sticks out everywhere. I'm tempted to cut it off actually but it looks so nice when its curly from being wet so that stops me. I'll have to start using the leave in conditioner when he's a bit older, great idea thank you.

Personally I don't really like leave in conditioners but you'll get a feel for what you like later on.

Another product is moroccan oil, thats the brand name but the main ingredient is argan oil (lots of different brands). I love the stuff! I went from dark brown to platinum blonde and this stuff saved my hair made it so soft and my curls lush!

Only need a tiny tiny drop! I often run it through my hair then whatever is left on my hands run through DD's hair.

We have an African hair shop at our local shopping centre, sells all sorts of wonderful products and things for asian and african hair.
Perhaps there is one you can find near you?

I think I will find out sometime later this year..but I guess we could just use the same products DP uses.

LimeSlice - thanks but there are no shops like that here unfortunately. It's a small town and very annoying that there is not even a craft or fabric shop, let alone an African hair shop.

emc2 - you're lucky your DP already has some stuff if you need to use it. Although a friend of mine also recently had a white/African baby, and his hair is straight, not at all like my bubs.

My partner is Aboriginal, and he's grown his hair so it has more of a wave, however the photos of him as a toddler, he has curly hair.

He didn't know that he is possibly distantly related to a couple of presenters on ABC tv (anyone remember Clarence on Gardening Australia or the Black Olive chef?) He does look a bit like those guys.

We have a few African shops in Brisbane, there was one down the road from me here at one point. But most of them are on the other side of town. My brother's BIL is from west Africa, from Guinea.

Yep I get you, my sister had those ringlets I used to call them curly fries cause they were so tight n springy..
Then she went through that Afro phase too lol it used to be everywhere lol I loved her hair then the hairdresser ruined all the curls now it's just one big boofy fuzz ball soo annoyed..
My little sIL has the tight ringlets too but can't fond ways to maintain them neither she actually cries lol
