my 5 week old is sooo fussy at the bottle. he takes forever to finish it, with me constantly tapping the bottle, blowing on his face, tickling his feet to remind him to keep sucking.
it is taking over an hour for him to finish a bottle. i make up 120ml, but he never seems to drink more than 100ml.
is this normal, anyone else having an argument with a newborn at every feed time???
sorry I can't remember how long my boys took but I do remember a little trick.... slightly undo the lid to the bottle and it will flow easier...
Oh yep thats me too, when DD was 5 weeks i was having the exact same treouble sometimes i still get it now..
Its just them i dont think its anything to worry about...
My DD was frustrating the s**t out of me and i would say to my mum : geezz by the time she finished this one its going to be time for the next...
Just hang in there babe, its hard i know.. i just gently pretend to pull it out and they seem to latch back on again or i make sure she wakes right up and make sure she is ready to have it so now i have cut the time in half.. itms?
I know what you mean hun. DS was pretty slow with the bottles too, I thought it was because the flow was pretty slow for a newborn. Danielle gave you a good idea, I used to loosen the bottle top as well but not too much so the flow wasn't too fast. When DS was older, I did the opposite when I introduced the teat with 3 holes (the fastest flow) as he used to gag on it for ages, so I tightened the bottle cap to slow the flow a bit. When they are that little, they do tend to fall asleep on the bottle, I also did the tapping on the chin, blowing on the face......ahhhh the memories! lol
It gets better hun!
Another trick is to loosen the clothing so they are not so warm. When they are snug and warm they are more inclined to want to sleep.

That sounds pretty normal to me. All babies are different but it doesn't often matter if they are breast fed or bottle fed, if they are a slow feeder then they are slow no matter what the source :lol:
Our DD took an hour or so at each feed for a long time. She was a fraction quicker if she had a bottle but not much quicker TBH. As she got older, she got faster at feeding both from the breast and bottle. Our little girl really liked to enjoy her feed though and I spent 40 minutes at each feed for months. She became quicker with the bottle a lot sooner than the breast but until 9 months (I think), she would have still been a good 30 minutes at the breast. She only had 4 feeds most days from 12 weeks onwards so that was my saving grace :)
