When the paed checked DD2 at hospital before we went home she said she heard a click in her hip and that she would need an ultrasound to check it.
That's all she said and I didn't ask anything else at the time, DD was crying.
So what does it mean? What are the chances of something being wrong? :(
Heaven it can be a sign of hip dysplasia the sound happens as the hip moves out of the socket. Another sign is if the skin folds on their bottom don't line up when they are on their tummy. The only way to know for sure is with an ultrasound. Treatment is with a brace or harness, if it's treated early it can be fixed quickly.
I hope that's it's not hip dysplasia, and they should have explained it to you. Have you got a referral for the ultrasound?
With hip dysplasia, the earlier it is diagnosed, the better. We took DD to have her ultrasound at three weeks old and she was refused because there wasn't any specialists there to do it, told us to come back when she was six weeks.
If you have to have an ultrasound, go to the children's hospital with your referral. They will do it there, so I've been told, regardless of the age.
Sometimes it settles down by itself in those first few weeks, but get her checked out to make sure. Big :hug:
Harmony had a simular sound, so we had the ultrasound done.. she had sat in a frank breech possy for awhile whilst still inside, and her hips had "grown" out a little.... all we had to do was keep her in thick cloth nappies, which we were anyway.. and the next ultrasound showed them "coming back in".. so nothing else was needed.....

As the others have said it could be hip dyplasia. DS1 had it, it was picked up by the paed the day he was born and we went to see the paed orthopaedic surgeon when he was 4 days old and had an ultrasound done, his was severe though (ie socket not in the joint at all) and was in a pavlik harness until he was 10 weeks.
It is fantastic if it's picked up early as the sooner it's picked up the easier it is to correct. Hope you can get an ultrasound soon.
It sounds like they're worried about hip dysplasia. As the others have said, the sooner it's picked up the better. The ultrasound is the best way to pick it up when they're younger. There's a support group here on BB...

This happened to a friend of mine, and she used thick cloth nappies to keep the hips open until the ultrasound. Wearing bub in a carrier with legs in the "frog" position is also good. The ultrasound seems to be the only way to really tell with hip dysplasia, and opinions seems to differ about the best time to do it...some say asap, but some paed told her 6 weeks is the earliest they can properly diagnose.
I would try not to stress too much at this stage, and just book in for the ultrasound when you feel up for it and see what they say.

Just wanted to share my story with you, DD also had clicky hips, and uneven creases on the front of her thighs so she was sent for an u/s which showed there was absolutely nothing wrong with her hips. It was just one of those things.

Thanks Manhattan, I'm hoping it's nothing! Got the appt for the ultrasound on the 30th.
Well I took DD2 with me to my chiro appt and he had a look at her. He said she was tighter in one hip and adjusted her but said that there wasn't anything majorly wrong and it wouldn't be anything bad.
Then she had her check-up at the GP this morning and she tested her hips and couldn't hear a click at all.
So hopefully it was just something from being squished in there and has fixed itself.
Keep the appointment though, hun. DD's MCHN and the paed couldn't feel anything was wrong a few days later, and we fell into the security that she was going to be fine and I didn't put up a fight for the ultrasound. When we went back for the ultrasound, the paed (different one) couldn't feel anything was wrong, but sent us for an u/s just in case.
PM me if you want any info, or have any questions. There is a way to swaddle babies too that helps prevent it (if they are inclined). :hug:

Yeah, she did. And bad. Had it have been picked up on the original ultrasound, if we had been able to have it, it would have been better, we would have caught it earlier and it might not have gone on for so long. I'll PM you the link for the swaddling - another hip dysplasia mum had it on her FB.
DD3 had a hip and knee click. No one picked it up until I mentioned it. Thankfully it turning out to be nothing to worry about either. I can remember my panick and concern at the time..:hug:
Ugh, the panic is the worst!!!!! I was almost relieved to have an answer rather than go through any more stress waiting!:
Heaven - totally agree with Pac - keep the appointment just to be sure. My DS was identified with hip dysplasia at 5.5 months and I wish it had been identified earlier - a clinical test is reliant on the skill of the medical professional picking up the 'click', whereas an ultrasound will be conclusive. DS had numerous clinical checks on his hips as a newborn and no one picked it up due to the angle of his acetabular (in laymens terms thats the hip socket angle).
Although its unlikely anything will be wrong, you'd kick yourself later if its missed
And - avoid baby carriers such as babybjorn etc, if you use a baby carrier or sling, for the sake of healthy hips they need to have a wide base to 'splay' hips rather than let them 'dangle'

I'm another one who would urge you to keep the appointment. My DS hip dysplasia was picked up 3 months because I kept insisting something wasn't right. It wasn't being picked up without the ultrasound.
Like MummyNaomi said, it might be nothing, but best be sure now. Also, check out that wrapping technique, it could make a big difference. I know it would have helped, if only marginally for DS.
