I am sooooo SICK of Nits and headlice!!!!!!

Just a general whinge really!

DSS brought nits over just before Christmas and i still cant get rid of them!
I have had enough and poor Miss MJ hates the continual combing.

Now, EVERY time DSS comes over i treat both him and DD the day that he comes. After he has gone, MJ has second daily sittings of combing conditioner though her hair to make sure there are none in there (always find eggs)
I change her pillow case really frequently
Treat her every 7 days
put conditioner in her hair EVERY night to stop them sticking
I treat myself and DH (sometimes i have them too)

Its been 2 months, i have tried EVERY treatment there is i think and i just cant get rid of them.

Anyone got something that ALWAYS works for them that I may not have tried (save shaving our heads)

1, there are metal combs you can get. KP24 make one. Its not like the usual nit comb. The prongs are wider, round & very close together. Get one.
After a treatment, when the hair is wet, with or without conditioner, use this comb. It will drag out the eggs, as well as the teeny tiny nits the regular combs can miss. If the hair is dry, the comb will pull, specially if it is pulling eggs off the hair. If wet, the eggs will just slide off with the comb.

2, spray all of your heads every day with a mixture of lavender, tea tree oil & water.
This has worked for us. When I remember to spray them every day, the bugs stay away. If I forget for a couple of days, they are back!

These are the only 2 things I bother with now.
Of all the chemicals & things you can try I find these are best to keep on top of things.
If they are infested (happens on occasion :rolleyes:) I get the cheap pyranel foam & leave it in over night. Its only $8 or $9 a bottle, & they've not survived a full night of it yet. Everything else I've used I'll still find the odd one here & there alive after.

Clover, do you buy the mixture already made up or do you have to make it yourself. If you mix it up yourself what is the ratio?

I am also interested in the formula Clover. DD1 brought home headlice for the first time last night. I have the KP24 treatment in. The comb is great like you said. I would like something though that I can spray onto her head before sending her to DC just to deter any more lice. And the more natural the better.

We live in a place where nits are ruling! After my girls having them constantly for 18months( giving them to me, hubby, baby XDH and his wife in this time), using only conditioner and a comb every three days or everynight when it was bad, I finally tried Envirocare headlice shampoo. We have not had ONE single nit since October last year, despite the nit epidemic at school. Before envirocare they would have no nits in their hair in the morning and come home from school with anywhere between 5 -20 fully grown egg laying nits EVERYDAY! ARGHHHH
I cannot recommend it highly enough, it's natural and now we use this as a shampoo twice a week, no need for any other combs or anything. Anyone who has tried this no longer has nits, its unbelievable. At health food stores in big 1litre container, and we are not even half way through since October! RUN, get some!!!!!!

i simply swear by vinegar.. as a detterent and a treatment. Never failed me. but then my children have only had headlice twice and each time the vinegar worked first time and the next day I just did a treatment even though it wasn't needed..

I sit them in the bath.. rub vinegar through their hair, let them sit for 5-10 mins.. Then they wash it out then I put conditioner through for the smell and to make the hair slippery then i comb the conditioner through and rinse and repeat if needed..

Skye - got the metal comb (those plastic things are silly for fine children's hair) and this is what we use most nights with the conditioner and wet hair... I also have a similar concoction that i spray on her hair which is lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree oil mixed with conditioner and water in a spray bottle - but googling helped me find this one....

All Purpose Lice Deterrent Essential Oil Blend

Blend the following essential oils in a 10 mL brown glass bottle.
2 mL myrtle (Myrtus communis)
1 mL rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
1 mL eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules)
1 mL lemon (Citrus limon)
1 mL geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
2 mL lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
2 mL tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Store in a cool place out of the reach of children. 20 drops equals approximately 1 mL.

Lice Deterrent Spray

Mix 2 mL of the deterrent blend in 120 mL distilled water. Pour into a spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Avoid contact with eyes. Spray on the nape of the neck, behind ears, and the top of the head during lice outbreaks. Repeat throughout the day

The one litre one is about $19. I just googled it for you, they sell it online @ naturalhealthorganicsdotcomdotau then search envirocare. They have a small bottle on here, which I have not seen at our store, although the big is much cheaper. Like I said our town because of weather etc is full of nits, and we haven't seen one for months!!! Goodluck with your family!

what I love about using vinegar is that it is cheap and easy to come by

be warned though if they have been scratching their heads it may sting a little but I promise it is only a little.. like when you have a tiny cut and when the water first hits it it stings a little but then after a few moments it stops.. Does that make sense?

Last year I would wash their hair with vinegar everytime a note came home from school saying there had been a headlice outbreak or every few weeks..

I just fill a spray bottle of water & add a few drops of each. Spray into the hair when doing it each morning.
