Greywater for the garden and installing irrigation system

I am thinking of using some grey water for my garden. Mainly from the laundry as that is the easiest and cheapest way to reuse the water (without having a plummer install a system.
I use Ecostore laundry detergent which says that it is "garden friendly".

I have no idea how to install an irrigation system, but my plan is something like this: get a small (200lt) water tank which I place outside my laundry. Put the hose of my washing machine into this to collect the water. Have a dripper hose attached to that going onto the garden.
Does that make sense? Or is it completely ridiculous?
I wouldn't use the water when washing nappies, though.

Also, do you think it's ok to use this water on my vegie garden?

we have a simple setup...an old council bin that we got from the council depot beacuse the lid was broken and the bin had been replaced....drilled a hole in the bottom for a tap...drilled a hole in the top for the washing machine hose. Just under the washing machine hose bit we carved out a section on the side of the bin so that the handle of a sieve coud fit through and the sieve sits there and filters all the lint out of the washing water...then you slide the sieve out every few days and give it a wash.

The tap has a hose that connects to a small pump (cost about $100 on ebay) and the pump then feeds into ourndrip irrigation system that waters all of our garden...it also feeds our subsurface irrigation for the lawn so we always have nice green grass! Just make sure you don't use it for food crops.....you can't use greywater on the vegie patch.


Since we built ours we noticed mitre 10 actually sells the same system complete with bin and a pump etc.....I think bunnings might do them too...very simple but very effective.

You will need a pump...gravity will not be enough to feed an irrigation system unless you have really really sloped land..we have a 7 foot drop one side to the other and it wasn't enough to gravity feed.
