Hair colouring - some advice please!!

Ok so I'm having a get together today with some awesome chicks (winks at sterla and jahzara) and I'm having another friend colour my hair with one of those home jobs.

So before I pick it up from the shops, I was after some advice! Which brand is best? Especially for covering lots of grey hair!!!!

What colour should I go? I used to dye my hair a lot when I was younger and black was my colour of choice, but I think I've got too many wrinkles to get away with going black again, I mean I am approaching mid-30's here!!

My hair is currently a darkish brown (well where it's not grey).

Advice?

Ohhh I love how shiny peoples hair is after coloring. I always wished I could use a semi permanent.

To cover gray, I think the further away from black the better. Maybe just a shade darker than natural? I know a few sark friends who are grey have gone a bit lighter with their dyes of late.

What about a nice dark red? Like a browny base but red in the light?? Thats what I go and it lasts ages and doesnt show re-groth to fast as we have a dark base....

I like the Swazkoph (no idea how to spell it!!) Live brands - they have good colours and you get pleanty of dye in the pack.

I go to hairhouse warehouse and get the mix it yourself colours - much cheaper and the benefit is you can mix a small amount later and just touch up your roots. But if I use a packet job, I tend to go for the one on the ad that has the two tone colour and natural highlights - can't think what brand it is. Definitely go a permanent for covering greys, I have lots of those too!

I use the Schwartzkoff ones as well. I just use the semi permanents though because my hair is a close crop style and I can't justify the permanent colour when I get it cut every 4 weeks. All I want to do with a colour is cover the greys so I use the same colour as my natural colour which is a dark brown.

i dyed my hair last week and used the claerol (spelling bad) and used a chocolate chestnut colour and am in love with it they say grey coverage is 100% and it was on special at kmart where i live

I am 35 this year and I still dye my hair blue black :dunno:

If you like the darker colours you can get a red black or a purple black I think Schwartzkoff do these. I always go for permanent colours but they are NOT permanent by any means and for me are usually 60% washed out or faded by the 4 week mark.

You could go burgandy or a plum, I love Burgandy and when I get too old for Black I will go back to that.

I'm guessing since it's probably 11 o'clock you've already bought it, but the other night I used the loreal one with a comb type thingy. Only got it cheap but it really didn't cover much. I usually use Clairol tone on tone and it's much better.

I've dyed my hair just about every colour there is! ;) My two favourites as far as permanent colours go are Clairol Nice n Easy (the one with tri-tone colour to look more natural), and Garnier Nutrisse colours. These brands are my two go-to hair colourants because they're reasonably priced (I have very thick hair so need to use 2 packs, it can get exxy!), have a really comprehensive range of shades, and don't fry my hair like some other brands (Schwarzkopf Brilliance, I'm looking at YOU!). I also tried Schwarzkopf Coloriste a few weeks ago and really liked it, it didn't 'hurt' my hair and the processing time is only 10 minutes (good for a busy mum!)... and the best part was that I got two boxes of it for $11 from Crazy Clarks! (They sell discontinued shades so if you have a discount store nearby, check out your options)

My advice for you would be to go with a rich, espresso brown to start with and go from there :) When you've had black hair for so long, it can be easier to stick with something that's juuuust a couple of shades up so it doesn't shock your system lol. Depending on your colouring, you might go for ash tones (cool) or golden tones (warm) - you'll know which suits you because it will look more natural on you :)
Either way, it's only dye - have fun with it, you can always dye over it lol :D Have a great day, ladies! x

I would go a colour close to your natural one :D

I still dye my hair black (and you know how much of an old fogey I am, so age is irrelevant), either a blue black or if I want a bit of colour I go for one of the ones with purple or red through it.

You could try one of the blacks with, say, purple? The ones with tones and highlights. Will make you more of a MILF than you already are, sexy one!
