just need some advice and info regarding which type of pool is better? we have two quotes atm.. fibreglass is much cheaper but i like some of the concrete pooll features. also, dont want to go fibreglass only to find there are problems that are costly in the next few years. anyone able to help?
We had a fibreglass pool and I couldn't fault it!
Be careful with concrete, when we were living in Townsville we had friends with one and they couldn't use it in the middle of summer because it held so much heat, was like taking a very warm bath.

I'm no help! but I was wondering roughly how much they have quoted you? Would you mind sharing? We are hoping to put a pool in the next summer or 2.
We are putting a pool in our new house we are building and we will most likely go with fibreglass. The quotes we've had are about $5-$10K less than concrete. Both places we went to sell both concrete and fibreglass and actually recommended fibreglass! They said the major difference between fibreglass and concrete is with concrete, you can custom make your pool to any size or shape and to fit any area of your yard while you're a bit more limited with fibreglass.
We are planning on a long, skinny lap pool so it's easy for us to go with fibreglass. Both companies we spoke with said fibreglass pools stay warmer than concrete which means you get more swimming time :) Some of the fibreglass pools can be set in the ground a bit deeper so you can have the tiles around the inside of the top of the pool which makes them look like they're concrete. There are a whole range of different colours availalbe too so you can achieve a stylish look with the right colour choice.
We are looking at around $22K for a 3x10m fibreglass lap pool installed (with filter, creepy crawly, etc).
thanks for that. hmmm.. i guess what i am more worried about is the pool lifting or moving in the soil. my partner is of the opinion that the fibreglass is more likely to do that and the concrete wont. of course the fibreglass pool ppl say no no no, that doesnt happen anymore and the concrete pool guy said oh no that wont happen with conrete but will with fibreglass.
anyways.. got quoted 20 500 for the fibreglass pool (not including concrete and paving, electrics and fencing) and 26 500 for the concrete one (not including concrete paving and electrics and fencing) though the concrete poll is slightly bigger than the fibreglass one. its a lot of money, i dont want to make the wrong decision!
Our pool is perfectly fine 10 years later.
We sold the house but it came back on the market not that long ago and the pool still looks perfect.
There is also a lot of up keep for concrete pools.

Well what kind of finish are you having? The actual surface of the concrete (under the water) will need refinishing, not sure of the timeline.
Like if you're having a tiled finish things like regrouting, replacing tiles that come off, all that kind of stuff. I assume there would be upkeep to any finish.
Probably best to ask them what the upkeep will be.
Hi, we put our concrete pool in about 18 months ago and are very happy! We didn't have the option of fibreglass for various reasons including no way of lifting it in over the house due to being on a slope and powerlines. We've got solar heating so can control the temperature to a certain extent. I don't know what extra upkeep there is over fibreglass?? We have an electric kreepy krawly thing that we pop in every week or so to clean the leaves plus give it a brush occasionally and that's it. Managing the chemicals is going to be the same for either. The benefits of concrete are the flexibility in shapes (our's is actually partially raised out of the ground on one side to work with our sloping block) and the huge range of surfaces and tiles to choose from. I think the risk of pools moving and popping out is entirely dependant on the competency of the installer.

of you live somewhere where temps are extreme on either end of the scale fibreglass is better as extreme temp changes cause concrete to crack too.
Both pools have their good points and their bad points. Fiberglass is my preffered option.
Like everything the inital pool cost is listed but its all the add on extras that add up! And also there is the cost of soil removal and crane hire. Often these are only allowances!
What I would recommend is getting a salt water chlorinator, its much easier on the skin. A friend has one for her girls who have senstive skin and we did the same. It was a great choice.
