placenta previa grade 4 at 20 week scan

hi at my recent OB check up i was imformed i have placenta previa grade 4 and my placenta has attached its self to both sides of my cervix
i have been told i will be admitted to hosp at 34weeks and a c section at 37-38 weeks
i have been told no sex no lifting and to take it easy
this is my 3rd pregnancy with both my previous pregnancy being very healthy and both kids born naturally
i dont see my OB till april 5th and with being told i was to be admitted to hosp at 34 weeks i didnt ask any questions and now i have millions
i wanna know if anyone else had/s grade 4 placenta previa and did it move?
chances of bleeding and when?

please help me i have been searching on the net for answers but not getting the ones i need

was admitted to hosp thurs night for belly pain nothing dangeous just painful checked out fine but gave me a chance to really talk to the midwifes about placenta previa level 4
while they said it is possible for the placenta to move away from the cervix the chances it will move enough for a natural birth is extremly slim i still will be admitted at 34 weeks and booked for a c section at 37-38weeks
it was good though to really talk to them about it

Hopefully ferrals4 will drop in here. She has a placenta praevia.

MummyofTerrors-I was diagnoised with grade 4 PP at 19 weeks it was actually seen at my 12 week and 16 week scan but wasnt until 20 weeks that i had to see the OB for it i was also told what not to do and that i would bleed a few times and maybe even hospitalised numerous times the OB even said not to get excited or be around crowds:rolleyes: i wasnt sure about the crowds i still worked up until 34 weeks and did my normal activities except heavy lifting or exercise anyway they gave me only a 2% chance it would move and i had many scans and everyone up until 34 weeks was the same it was still covering the cervix so the OB ordered one more for 36 weeks and low and behold it had moved off the cervix and was 8mm away which is still to close for a natural birth but not as dangerous during a c section the OB's like them to be a minimum of 2cm away from the os but are happier with 3cm to go for a natural birth.
Anyhoo i had no bleeding except for extremely light brown c/m at 27 weeks and then 37 weeks my nesting urge kicked in and i went nuts cleaning the fridge, cupboards bathrooms ect you name it i cleaned it then later that night i had bleeding like the start of a period NOT GUSHING but enough it was in the toilet bowl so they put me in hospital for a few days and it stopped so i was allowed home and will be having my c section on friday dont panic to much there were 3 other ladies in hospital with me and all of them only had light spotting/bleeding after 34/36 weeks as the bottom of the uterus starts to stretch and can cause bleeding if you have bleeding they will put you in hospital for safety reasons as i have only had one episode and only have 4 days until my c section they let me go home to rest the majority of women dont bleed if they do the right thing and take it easy.
But i will say women with grade 4 PP are more at risk of vasa previa so make sure they check your placenta for that when you are further along to rule it out it is rare but a risk.

i had a grade 4 pp and unfortunately mine didnt move and DS ended up being born at 34 weeks due to bleeding. i had started to spot at 30 weeks and was admitted to hospital at 34+1 weeks for bleeding. DS was born 2 days later by c section due to more bleeding.

it is possible for it to move and fingers crossed it does move for you

while it really looks like ill be in hosp at 34 weeks and have a c section your support and storys have been great
while im only 24+4 weeks along ive started preparing my house for my family writing up a manual and having everything easy to find
while my children are both under 3 (my oldest turns 3 while im in hosp:( ) my oldest knows theres a baby in my tummy but other then that i havent really spoken to them about it.
ive been very lucky so far to have had no bleeds i am scared of waking up soaked but other then no lifting(unless no one is around to lift my 16month old) only gentle walking and no sex.
ill be just over 27 weeks when i ee my ob again and ill be requesting another ultrasound but i know not to get my hopes up

mummyofterrors - my first big bleed was when i used the toilet. in fact, so was my second. i also only noticed the spotting when i wiped too after going to the toilet. i hope the placenta moves for you xx

just a quick update:

i aw my ob last night and went through my 20 week U/S results
at 20 weeks my placenta was covering my cervix and was 2.19cm over the otherside
goodnews was it was currently postierer(sp)
but my ob said theres less then 0.5% chance of it moving for a natural birth
booked in next wednesday for a follow up U/S
still no bleeding :D

I had grade 4 as well... mine was like yours & completely covering.. it stayed posterior which was lucky!

I had absolutely no signs of bleeding up until 32 weeks... got out of the shower one night to put my clothes on & its just started... massive gush :(
It went for about 40 mins on and off, I was taken to hospital, and then rushed via ambulance to a different hospital that had the facilities to deal with a 32 week old bubba in NICU.
Luckily, the bleeding stopped, they kept me in for 2 weeks (I had small spots of old blood) - and let me out at 34 weeks to go home on bed rest only.
I was home for a week, and at 35 weeks, had another bleed, so was taken to hospital again. It took longer to stop that time, but it was minimal enough to monitor.... I ended up holding on until 36 weeks where I had a c/s.

My FS said with the grade that I had, it was very rare that I didn't have any bleeding until 32 weeks, he said it was more common to have bleeding (even if it's just spotting) from 28 weeks onwards.

My advice would be to take it easy (do as little as possible!) - and definately have the household organised to be without you for a few weeks!
The only other thing I can say is that you need to get to a hospital or phone them at the very least at ANY sign of bleeding at all.
My FS wanted to have me in hospital from 30 weeks on, but for us it just wasn't possible... look after yourself :hug:

thank you hollybolly my ob wants me in hosp at 34 weeks and midwifes explained why

people seem amazed ive had no bleeding especially the tech at my 20 week scan so i take everyday as a good day until i do have a bleed

my midwife warned me last night from 28weeks bleeding is more common

i started spotting at 30 weeks then had a big bleed at 34 weeks. i previously hadnt had any bleeding until then. i was the same as you. everyone was surprised that i hadnt had any bleeding

its good that there were more woman with grade 4 who didnt bleed til after 28 weeks

the other question i got asked was did i have any pain???? i kept saying no cause she(midwife) asked with the bleeding
but ive had pain down there especially after walking(even short ones) didnt think anything of it so ill be asking again at my next OB appt if the pain im getting is normal but also i know what questions to ask during my U/S next week

i always had pain but i think mine were more of bh then anything else. i knew when i had done too much coz i would have to rest from the pain.

with my grade 4 PP i didnt bleed until 37 weeks and it was from going nuts with house work i was in hospital for 3 days went home for a few days then had a c section at 38+2 weeks my PP was totally covering the os up until 36 weeks when it moved slightly and ended up 7mm from the os after the c section the specialist said it was half anterior and half posterior which make the different u/s results make sense she said the placenta started at the front and went under bub and wrapped around the back she said most unusual postion and it turned out bub had her cord around her neck so very lucky we had a c section.
My doctor cant believe i had no bleeding until 37 weeks so i guess everyone is different.

im just hoping my cervix remains closed until my c-section

i keep reading women with placenta previa should rest alot especially with there legs elevated to encourage the placenta to 'move' and less likely to bleed
but from what ive read it makes no difference

MY PLACENTA HAS MOVED IT IS NOW 1CM AWAY FROM MY CERVIX
best news ive had in a looooooooong time :D chances of a natural birth is HIGH HIGH HIGH :D it should continue to move and be totally clear!
i see my ob on monday but chances of me going in at 34weeks is so so so slim :D
so now its a grade 2 :D
