I have, our hospital doesn't do scans at all unless its an emergency and if you want a 12 weeks scan you have to pay for it with no medicare rebate unless there is a scare, with mine because they thought my pregnancy was in danger they had a medical reason so I could receive $$ back from medicare. But if I wanted one just for dating & peace of mind I wouldn't receive any back & it was all on what was on the referral.
My hospital doesn't do the 12 week scan either. So I just went to the imaging place here that does u/s and x-rays and had to pay the difference which was only $30 and medicare paid the rest.
my dr said they have stoped them here aswell i had one when i was 6 weeks and will have another around 18 weeks
My GP said i wouldn't have to pay for this one as i paid for my last two. When i booked it she said if i was over 35 it would be free.
I didn't have to pay when i had one done with Alex but that was booked from the midwife as i saw them before 12 weeks.
Strange..... where I went for my scan had a big sign up that said you would not receive anything from medicare for any scans other than your 18-20 week one and when I questioned them they said it was on a case to case basis & I was eligible for the medicare rebate for that particular scan.... I asked why & they said because the scan was done due to possible m/c.
I booked mine today and was told I could claim a % back from medicare - mind you had a scan at 8w5d paid $145 and got $50 back. Was also told to have it between 11w 5 d and 12w 5d - then she told me it would take quite a few weeks to get in (am nearly 11 weeks) and then booked me in at exactly 12 weeks. Confusing???
That seems slightly strange to me. I had to pay for my 12 week scan upfront and then take the receipt to Medicare to claim back (I didn't get very much back, but it was better than nothing). I did have a referral from my OB for the scan (which included the nuchal scan) and I don't know if that makes a difference, because I think Medicare record the information of the referring doctor. Ask for a receipt and take the form to Medicare anyway - the worst they can do is say no, there is no claimable benefit.
I didn't pay as my GP bulk bills and he referred me, but if I was referred by the hospital I would have paid $115, but you get about $80 back from medicare... as with the other scans I had!
Just moving to 1st trimester discussion...
mmm I am not sure what the go is here??? I have had 5 nuchal scans and all of them were done with a referral to a foetal medicine ob. Of course I had to pay up front but when I went to medicare I got 85% of the scheduled fee back. I don't remember being very much out of pocket at all. Some of those scans were done prior to being 35 and others were done after I turned 35.
Perhaps it is due to the referral process? I am not sure???
I had the sacn. I had to pay $180 and I got about $70 back from medicare. The blood tests for it cost $100 and I will get some of that back from medicare but not sure how much.
My specialist always ticks the bulk bill box on the path form so I always get 100% back on the pathology for nuchal scans. My scan was $190.
We didn't have the scan done with this pg, but did with the last one. My gp did the referall, the blood tests were done at a QML clinic (no charge), and the scan was done at the hospital at no cost at all.
This pregnancy the 18 week ultrasound was done at a private clinic, and was also bulkbilled.
I didn't know that you had to pay for scans!
I'll be having mine at the hospital and both the BT and the scan are freebies. My 18 week is also free.
All my scans have been free. My Dr is a GP with Ob training, therefore, he can refer me for as many scans as he feels necessary and they are all bulk billed.
I am having an NT scan done around 12 weeks, and that plus the BTs are free, because I have had a baby with fetal abnormalities before.
Michelle, as you know I was stuffed around with my NT scan!
But it's finally booked in! I have to pay $175 for the scan and $80 for the blood test. Expensive but soooo worth it to see our baby for the first time! :D

Goldilocks I think your right it is well worth the money and it also gives you peace of mind.
I'm looking forward to having mine done and see what Kimberley does this time. Still praying that nothing has gone wrong from my last scan as my Dr nicely pointed out she doesn't relax about pregnancies until they have reached passed the 12weeks.
