Wasnt happy with Dr

Hi all

I went to the Dr today. I didnt click with him.

Told me what I already knew and wasnt very helpful.

Went in and said, Ive had a positive pregnancy test (didnt specify home test, I think that was my down fall).

He told me about GD and Preclampsia, warned me about miscarriages. Sent me to the nurse for bloods, bp and weight. Nurse had gone home so I didnt get any of them done.

Went to the IMVS and had my bloods which turned out to be Antenatal bloods, they take a few days to come back. So Im going to do my last home pregnancy test tomorrow to make myself feel better.

If I dont have results by Friday Im going to call the surgery.

Should I have asked more questions? Should I have been booked in for a scan?

He did confirm that by his calculations I would be 6weeks, 2 days which is what Ive worked it out to be too.

That sounds pretty normal for a first GP visit.

Did you have more questions? I'm sure that there is someone here who could help you if its pregnancy related.

I think these days they only ever book you in for a scan if you don't know your dates, then if you want to, to have the nuchal fold one at 12-14 wks. (I remember my GP giving me the forms for it)

My GP didnt even do a preg test when I went in, just a blood test. when I asked about it he said the home ones are just as effective.

Did he tell you to call teh hospital you will be booked in to?

Yeah, pretty much what Starrysky has said. I used an OBS cos I went private, so I got a bit more one on one time but he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know

Thats more information than what i was given.

You will learn more when you start antenatal and there is always us on BB who will answer any questions and no question is stupid :)

I wasn't told what foods to avoid, i just turned to BB and looked through posts to get my answers but the main things i avoided were: alcohol, soft serve ice cream, most pre packed salads, deli meats and salads. Sushi is a big one, try avoid some take away foods incase of food poisoning. Though my morning sickness was absolutely terrible i couldnt eat a proper meal until i was 25 weeks i just snacked lots.

Are you going public or private? If you are public, you will only see an OB if deemed high risk.

I *think* (im not sure, cos I went public) if you're private, you find an OB and see them for your care? someone else can probably clarify that!

The next step for you would be to ring the hospital you want to birth at (or is closest to you) you probably wont see anyone until you are about 16 weeks (this is normal)
IF you do want a dating scan and the nuchal test, go back to another GP and say you want a dating scan, and the forms for the nuchal fold test (this involves a blood test as well) also ask them what happens now in regards to hospital ante natal appointments.

in Regards to whats best to eat, there are heaps of threads in here on the pregnancy forum, have you joined a Belly buddies thread yet? I highly recomend that! there will be women going through your pregnancy stages at the same time and will be a wealth of support and advice for you.

We only have one hospital and one Ob in town. Should I look at booking now? I might give them a call and make an appointment for next week.

Yep, I reckon just ring the hospital in that case, they will be able to help you out and fill in all the gaps.

You need to decide what model of care is available to you and what you'd like. Public, private, home birth.
If you want to go privately you need to ring around and find an obstetrician. If you want to go publicly you need to check out your options and look into those. Gp's sometimes do shared care but generally these many have nothing to do with pregnancies and birth. My gp didn't give me a blood test or a urine test she said a positive was a positive and there was no point. I did ask her if she recommended anyone and she gave me some names but that was about it. It was up to me to take the responsibility.

That's how I found BB too. I started googling pregnancy to find out what I should and shouldn't be doing. :)

Best of luck with your pregnancy. Ask all the questions you like around here, lots of knowledgable ladies and gents around.

ring the hospital and tell them that you have no idea what you should be doing or where to find out what your options in regards to birthing and antenatal care options are. They should be able to discuss some of this on the phone with you and send out some pamplets and info to read through.

Like the others have said, that sounds pretty normal TBH. It's a bit frustrating when it's your first pregnancy though and you have no idea what to do next! Thankfully I had joined BB while TTC too so I could ask questions on here but I also had several friends with kids or pregnant at the time who were able to guide me. Get yourself familiar with the BB pregnancy threads, there is loads of information in there.

When I spoke to the receptionist at my OB's office, she gave me all the info I needed at that point in time and booked in our first appointment with the OB which was also our first scan - at 10 weeks. My OB doesn't generally do appointments any earlier due to the chances of miscarriages. At that 10 week appointment, our OB told us everything else we needed to know (again, at that point in time), filled out the referral to get our 12 week scans done and we asked some questions.

Im going to wait for the results (or call friday which ever is sooner) and when I go next week Im going to be armed with questions.

I did the same thing with my Ob. I got some info from my GP about Ob's at the hospital we were looking at and she recommended two of them (big Sydney Hospital). I rang one but didn't have an appointment with him till I was about 14wks. He did send me a referral for the NT scan. I didn't want to have this one so just got a normal referral for a feotal wellbeing scan from my GP. Ob then answered all my questions and booked me into the hospital when I first saw him :D

Wow that a stuff up!!!

I called the surgery for my results (which came up great lol).

Asked if my test confirmed my pregnancy, nope it was only an antenatal screening. Lady called the IMVS for me and it hadn't been done but they still had some of my bloods left so they are going to do the HCG test and I can call for them tomorrow :D

I feel sooooo much better.

If you want to go with a private OB, you need to book in pretty quickly. A lot of the popular ones you practically have to book the day you conceive :)

WRT diet - there's an article on BB somewhere about the Brewer diet. Nutrition in pregnancy is very important - not just to help grow your passenger and prevent defects, but the right nutrition can also prevent many pregnancy related illnesses. Don't just read about what NOT to eat, but also read up on what to eat at different stages.

If you're not taking a pre-natal vitamin, start taking one. You need the folic acid and other supplements.

Congratz on the pregnancy! I booked an obs privately about a week after I got my home BFP, which was just after my blood test confirmed it. I saw the obs on wednesday and he said I was maybe 4 days later than what I may be but kept the same due day anyway. I decided to go privately with this obs and the hospital he works at because of recommendations. Going privately is heaps more expensive than public, but you do see the obs every time you have an appointment (which is once a month) and they tend to have a little ultrasound so that they can check on the bub. However, some of the test, going private, like for the first trimester bloods, ( and I need to do CMV serology because i work in a virus lab) and the downs screening ultrasound are really expensive privately, so I'm doing them as a public patient, which you are completely entitled to do.

Its up to do, if you want to go public or private, but at least with private you can choose everything the way you want it to be.....but for a price
