Should I get her checked?

DD is 5 months old & has a fever.

She's had a bit of phlegm over the past couple of weeks & has been a bit chesty, but no fevers & its been clearing up. No snot & chest pretty much clear.

She's had the runs all this time too & I figured it was from all the gunk she was swallowing.

She has no signs of teething (other than the endless amounts of drool, but thats always been there!)

There's nothing else. Just the fever. It feels very high to me, but I have no thermometer. From sick kids in the past I can feel it'd be over 38.

She's not very happy. Just had a sleep & woke up like she was in pain. Tried nurofen, but she spat most of it out. Gave her a bath & she's settled down now, but hasn't fed properly since this morning... ok, now she's feeding, lol. But she's not as into it as she usually would be IYKWIM.

I'm heading to town for a themometer, will try panadol & give the nurofen another go later, but should I see if my gp will check her over? Or try get her checked at the hossy? Or wait 24hours?

Skye, do you feel your DD needs to be checked out? If you do, you know her best, get her to the hospital.

Every time I've taken Liebling (he has this happy thing of stopping breathing every now and then to scare me - not done it for over a year now thankfully) they have given him a clean bill of health eventually and told me they'd rather see a healthy child whose parents wanted to make sure he was OK than a sick child whose parents hadn't wanted to "bother" people until it became really bad.

I'd suggest getting bub checked just for peace of mind. If I ever feel iffy about Pixie I take her to the dr's

I would get her checked out. Because often with a fever it shows something is potentially going on, and as she had chest stuff that seems to have cleared up, you want to make sure it is all clear. Secondary chest infections can come weeks after other symptoms have all but gone.

You are her mama, you know her best, if you feel like you have checked everything you know to check at home, and she seems worse, or you would like someone else to cast their eyes over her then go and see someone. Remember you can call the 24hr nurse they help do a home assesment and they often guide you on whether you need a doctor.

I'm going to get someone to check her over if she hasn't wee'd by the time I get to town.
I changed her night nappy before the girls went to school... about 8, & unless she wee'd in the bath, she's been dry since. Thats over 3 hours now. I haven't checked to see how wet her night nappy was yet, but thats enough to have me worried...

I probably wouldnt rush to the hospital unless her temperature is at a dangerous level (i think above 39?).. but i would make an appointment at with your doctor to get her checked out.. with those symptoms (esp the temp) it could be an ear infection and she may need antibiotics. All my kids as babies had a fair few ear infections (very common for babies).

ETA.. opps i read your post wrong sorry, thought it said she had a temp. But for her chest im not sure if you can get something from the Fess range at the chemist that will help clear it a bit?

ShootingStar - it is the fever I'm worried about. The mucous she had over the past few weeks has cleared over the last few days, then over 38 fevers started this morning.

She's pretty obviously feeling like crap & hates the taste of the nurofen (so spewed most of the last lot back up :rolleyes:), but her fever is down (must've got enough nurofen) & she's weeing, so I'm waiting til tomorrow at least to see how she goes.

She's so hot when she puked it was hot on my leg!

I held out yesterday, since she was weeing, but this morning she wasn't & was still very hot (38.6).
Took her into the hossy & she has an ear infection in both ears & a throat infection :( :(

I feel horrible. There was nothing to show thats what was up! No rubbing/pulling her ears. She was off feeds a little, but not pulling off & crying like DS did with a throat infection as a baby :(

Oh well. She's had 2 wee's that I know of since 8am & we now have penicillin. I've got a bottle of water in the cot for her to play with & am feeding her every chance I get.

Lets hope there's no reaction to th penicillin now! She's a very sensitive baby.

awww little one. The symptoms can be so different for each baby. I hope she gets better quick smart. All things considering you were very alert to the situation I think you should be proud of how you handled it.

I'm so tired I'm over stressing! I can relax now & try to get my **** together!

Ouch! Poor bubba! Well at least you have answers as to why she felt hot. FX for a speedy recovery!

Hope she gets better soon Skye: it is so hard to know if there is something to worry about so don't beat yourself up. You noticed there was something wrong and got it treated, you did your very best. That's nothing to get upset about - if she had been pulling her ears and crying and you were still doing nothing, that's something to beat yourself up about with!

Poor darling hope she is better soon hun xoxox FWIW my DD had over 10-15 ear infections from 6 mths to 3 yrs and she never complained or pulled her ears but the fever was the sign for us because she would have a cold first, then that would turn to the secondary infection in her ears once the cold symptoms cleared up and all we had sign of was the fever. Something to keep in mind. I would rather take my kids to the dr and be told they are fine and take them home than sit and worry but that is just me.

Glad you have answers now hun and shes on ABs to get her better. Its very hard with babies to know whats wrong when they cant tell you so dont be too hard on yourself. DD had ear infections every second week during the cooler months as a bub.. i just went with a rule, if she had any flu symptoms that came with a temp then thats what most probably it was. So least youll know in future now too. Big hugs, hope she has a speedy recovery xx

She's on the improve already :) Catching up on lots of sleep & no panadol today!
Nappies are improving too :)
