My step dad is cook islander and is the best hangi cook ever!!
This is where they cook food in the ground for hours and hours and believe me its DELICIOUS!!!
im so excited its been yrs since we have had one, even though we have a permanent hangi pit in our back yard lol!!
Cant wait for moyonaise, chop sui, puki and the most tender legs of lamb and chicken EVER!!

I've been to a few hangis - or is it eaten a few? Are they the event or the meal?
We have always had a bit of a do around digging the pit, sitting around while it cooks and then eating it.

We ate the most spectacular food out of the ground when we honeymooned in the Cook Islands. Very jealous you have a family member who can cook you delicious things!

just me- yeah sometimes they have hangi's at special occaisions ecspecially a hair cutting of a child..
we used to have them all the time but Sd got really lazy lol!! but i sort of got everyone revved up and now he has to do it lol

I haven't had one in years! Our local footy club held one every year as a fundraiser and it was always fantastic.

puki (sp) is a banana based side dish and its purple!! and the best thing is everything we eat out of it is with coconut milk/cream...

Yum! We called them gwabi where I grew up in the Solomon Islands.
Well been from NZ and DH is a maori (me too but you wouldnt know it :o im so lilly white)
hangi was always on the menu especially at big family events - tangis (funerals) weddings, 21sts etc.
Im not too fussed on them to be honest especially the traditional ground ones, I dont like the earthy flavour.
However give me a keg hangi (its steamed in a revamped keg instead of the ground pit) and im much happier. Doesnt take as long either in the keg and theres no big hole to be dug. Not that I do that bit anyway :clap:
it was so long ago i cant even remember wat it tasted like lol but i would love to have another one
lol you know what the funniest thing is the inside of our hangi the walls of it is an old steel washing machine LOL
Mmmm yum, I have only ever been to one (eaten one?!) once and I remember it being the juiciest, tenderest tastiest meat I have ever had!!! Enjoy!
