Playing with toys - 9-10months old

Does / did your baby actually play with toys around 9-10 months old?

DS will play with a ball or a balloon, and he will put anything in his mouth, but he doesn't really cuddle toys or play with things ... and he's more interested in paper of any description than any old toy, anyway!

Is this normal?

I'm not concerned about him developmentally - he's growing, interacting, smiling, babbling, laughing, looking and responding - I'm just wondering whether the whole "toy" malarkey is a marketing gimmick, and we should have just bought a bag of balloons and grabbed an empty box and been done with it ... ;)

Would love to hear others' experiences :)

Google something like Montessori toys for babies, there are a few great articles out there for what babies need to help with development and it ain't multi colored plastic Fisher Price stuff(although we have loads of that here too) :rolleyes: a few basics st that age with lots of verbal interaction, outdoor play and singing etc is all they need!!!

Hi peanutter, DS is only 6 months old and things may change as he gets older but I think he does both! plays with toys and like to grab/destroy/eat anything I will allow him to touch :D He is pretty gently though really but I gave him a junk mail catalog yesterday and he tore it up which wa sreally cute lol but with toys he has figured out what makes them open and what makes the noise and what's good to chew etc and I think he really enjoys them. As I said when he's older and can get around crawling or walking things may be different.

At that age Mitchell liked anything that made noise. Scrunching up the newspaper was his fave thing in the world. Not much other interest in toys really!

Neither of my kids have been real toy fans.
When DD was little she had a little basket of 'stuff' balls, bottles filled with rice/pasta/coloured water. She had a few toys but I just put them away as she wasn't interested. I felt bad one day when I went to a GF's house and her little guy had thousands of toys so bought a heap, but she still wasn't interested.
DS is just 2 and and has only started really playing with toys this last Christmas.

My DD has toys and does "play" with them in the sense that she will sit and touch them and be entertained by them. Her favorites are ones that make noise so her "Scout" as he not only speaks, sings but also has a name that lights up and then her blocks which she likes to put in her mouth or let me build a stack and then knock them over. She has a sleep toy which is bunny which she cuddles but that's pretty much it. She has a heap of toys in one corner of the room (yes, they are sitting next to or on top of the toy box - :lol:) and very occasionally she will crawl over and choose a toy and play. Mostly though she is the same as your DH, she likes paper, toilet rolls, my shoes etc.

I don't think kids play with toys until they are able to project "personality" onto them (which in turn won't happen til they realise THEY are a person and that other people are NOT them, if this makes sense?)

I think Flynn was obsessed with anything with wheels at that age, to the point where my mum (a childcare worker) was worried he was autistic.

he loves shoes ... well, he loves trying to eat shoes ...

he loves books, he could turn the pages at only a few months old, and he loves blocks.

I'm not stressed, I'm just wondering why there's so many toys for 0-3months, 0-6months, 6-9 months etc, when they don't seem to care!!

Definitely not just you, dd is surrounded by toys as we speak, what's she playing with and exploring...... Her pram wheel!

My DS loves his hands. His left is his favourite. When he gets over his he's happy to stare at and play with someone else's. We could have saved on some of the toys we have bought :)

He he..... My dd is totally feral, the other day she ate rabbit poo off the grass!
