How young did you start toilet training? Were do I start?

Just wondering what age is okay to start toilet training? Oviously I know all babies are different, but living with my mum (and of course shes full of advice :p) She thinks I should start toilet training DD, beacause "all of you 4 kids were toilet trained by 18months" :rolleyes: and a few other people have told me their kids were TT by 18 months. Shes even gone and got a little seat for her lol

DD is just over 14months. But were do I start!? How do I know if shes ready? is 14 months too young?

Both of my girls started at 2yrs, although I did sit them on the potty "just for fun" from about 18mths.

A friend recommended thepottytrainer (google) so I checked out their method and it has worked for me wth both of my girls!

You could try sitting her on the potty now - but just for something fun like story time, so she becomes familiar with it.
But really, just start when youre comfortable :)

my parents are also pressuring me to toilet train him, but i'm not sure he's ready (or rather, that i am!)

i've heard that the first thing i should do is to google "signs a toddler is ready for toilet training" ..... will do that when i'm done with the assignment i'm currently (not) working on.

like is she I comfortable in a wet nappy? Is she takinginterest when you go?

I started my son early and he got freaked by the pressure so I waited til summer just gone, he's 3 a d was very ready and not too hard. Got it quick ;)


I started just having the potty around the house, letting him ply with it and get used to it first.and as he got in the bath we put him on.

The big oilet scares alOt of kids so I wouldn't put her on there first. Kids get scared up high.

Oh a d a huge thing. Don't go on about it. Don't let anybody go on and on!!!! My mil did and my son got so freaked and scared he would scream!

Make it fun. If there's accidents there needs to be gentle explaniation not discipline. :)
Personally I think 14 months is too young but if you feel here's the signs there...

14mths is a bit young, though you could start sitting her on the toilet or potty just to get her used to it if she likes to sit there. If not I definately wouldn't push it as she might start to get scared of it and not want to do it at all. Most kids don't have control over their muscles to wee and poo until they're about 18-24mths.
I started toilet training DD at about 18mth, just by putting her on the loo when she had a bath. She got the idea and then went from there, she practically trainer herself!! By 20mths she was fully toilet trained. DS1 on the other hand is taking a bit longer and I'm not pushing it. He had absolutely no interest in the toilet at 18mths so I didn't put him on it. He's now 2 1/2 and is totally into sitting on the toilet and watching others go. He is slowly getting there.
Go at your DD's pace. You know her best and you will be able to tell if she wants to and is capable to do it or not.

IMO 14 months is a bit young. Unless, she is giving you signs that she is ready. Taking off her nappy - becoming distressed when she is wet/soiled, etc... Showing real interest in the toilet - that kinda thing.

My DD2 was out of nappies during the day on Christmas Day 2008 - she turned 2 at the end of February 2009. She was 3 months younger than what my DD1 was. I really honestly think she was so early because she copied my eldest. I had everybody telling me that she was far too young & let her be a baby, all that kinda jazz. But honestly, she took the stress right out of it because she did it all on her own! I just had a potty & would have that in whatever room she was playing in & she would use that.

Maybe start by having a potty in the house to use at bathtime (whilst the water is running in the bath is a great way! lol) & then go from there.

She knows when shes doing wee's, she stops what shes doing and looks down. And poo's well lol you can hear her grunting away :p Then when she has done a poo she goes and gets her change mat and lies down on it for me to change her. She watch's me go to the toilet, and I have sat her on the toilet on her little seat, she doesnt get scared she just sits there and gets toilet paper and wipes her self and then puts the toilet paper in the toilet and does it again :p

I just dont know how to associate the 2....she isnt speaking yet, so she cant tell me that shes doing a wee, or that she needs too. She is starting to dress herself.

Yay she did a poo on the toilet just before :) but i think that was just good timing!
