Did I just decide to do something foolish?

We are moving in a couple of weeks to a house with no built in robes. For this thread, I'm just talking about the master bedroom (even though there are NO bir's at all). At the current place, there is one bir which has our "don't wear often" clothes (which yes, probably do need to be culled again), and we have a mobile clothes rack in front of the bir with what we wear all the time (plus some shelves in the bir that we use, and other drawers for socks and underwear).

So what we need at the new place (which is a 1950's style place) is a couple of wardrobes. Looking online they are quite exxy (even for second hand), and haven't seen anything that I love yet at St.Vinnies which is also affordable. BUT, and I do mean BUT, I was just in our garage, and there is a pair of wardrobes, which just need some tlc. (Read: complete sand and varnish, some door alignment, lock and bug removal, and a vac out)

They are a matching pair in a light pine colour. They have some water marks on them, which I hope will come out when they are sanded. Will they?

The foolish part? I want to rejuvenate these before we move. :doh: Why on earth did I think that would be clever???? I haven't even got time to bake a cake, when I should be packing! (Shouldn't be on here either! but, :shhh: don't tell anyone ;) ) I would also need to make room in the garage for them to be able to be worked on, or since one of the garden sheds is just about empty (it wouldn't take me long to empty it entirely), I could move them into there to do, and have to move less in the garage to get them out.

Opinions please!

I also found a couple of other bits of furniture (old and retro) in the garage, but I'm trying to keep the wardrobes as my priority.

sorry Im just trying to get over the part where you said you didnt have enough time to bake a cake *gasps* there is ALWAYS time for cake!!
As for the wardrobes Id be inclinded to use your mobile clothes rack when you move and tackle the wardrobe restoration once settled in and not so busy?

likewise. To do a proper job with watermarks it could take a while and also the varnish might not be 100% hard prior to moving. You're more likely to damage your handiwork in transit with new varnish. As for the watermarks it's highly unlikely they'll come out but worth a shot to save a few $$$

Hmm. Good thoughts! I hadn't thought about potentially damaging my handiwork. I would definitely be able to give them more time at the new place (she says in hope).

I know Party of Five, hard to believe, but hardly enough time for cake! I think I said somewhere already that I don't really have the time to make one for the head chef where I worked on Saturday. Oh yeah, I think I said it to you! :redface: My brain is mash! Now I really must do the dishes so that I can cook dinner! eek!

(And who was the silly person who thought they would have time to fix up a pair of wardrobes. Sheesh, isn't she crazy?! lol)

hmmm im not going to say foolish, but maybe slightly optimistic? Lol. sounds like a big job.....might be best to wait until you move if there is more space? :)

Foolishness... Optimism... Sometime hard to tell the difference isn't it? Not really more space at the new place, but I'll make it a sunny weekend project. I'll get everything together I need and get into it, while the kids run amock in the garden!

Have definitely decided to do this job AFTER the move. If I mention it again in the next couple of weeks, can someone please promptly kick me back off the computer so that I keep packing!?

I'm going to kick myself off right now, since the Man has borrowed a double horse float to move stuff in (and has not long parked it in our driveway), which I want filled by tonight. How do you reckon I'll go (by myself of course)?

I have an old skool set of old wardrobes, they are brilliant and a great talking point for visitors too - I didn't even have to do anything to them....(lucky find** in a country antique shop when I lived out north lol).

I reckon hold off fixing them until you move, JIC (don't want to jinx ya hun)!

i would also hold off until after if you can make do with the mobile ones! Which reminds me I have 3 wardrobes I need gone before these babies are born ARGH!!

Okay. Float is nearly full! Moved the Boy's wardrobe in there by myself and then filled it full of Rhino's clothes! Now I'm wondering what (aside from everything!) to put in there.

Yeah theres 2 or 3 ... not sure if you'd be interested but sure takes the work out of restoring something they are older but in really good condition with a mirror in the door (only 1 door which is a bit of a pain but i got used to it as we only use wardrobes for coats/jackets/not worn often etc) .... i can take photos if you're interested ... obviously depends where you are too lol!

Am interested... I'm moving to Lancefield, and I'm sure the Man wouldn't mind a trip with the trailer!
