We've spent the morning at the emergency department :(

What a morning.

I took DD to the GP late yesterday to try and get something stronger to help with severe teething as Nurofen and Panadol didn't seem to be helping. Her drooling was really worrying me - she had 4 outfit changes, soaked two sleeping bags and several bibs all before noon.

GP suspected tonsillitis and confirmed it after a check of her throat. He wouldn't give a script for Pain Stop or Phernergan but put her on antibiotics.

DD was super unsettled again last night and we just couldn't get her down. My SIL is best friends with one of our GPs so I messages her for advice. She happened to be at dinner with the GP friend and told me to get the Pain Stop from her house. The GP said it was fine and relayed the dosage details to SIL. We gave it to DD at 10pm along with her next dose of antibiotics. She went straight to sleep and didn't wake until 8am. Yay. Or so I thought....

I got her up after I posted on here this morning and took her antibiotics with me to give her on the change table. One cheek was bright red and seemed a bit raised but I thought it was just from the way she'd been sleeping as her skin does mark easily and she goes red when hot. I gave her the antibiotics then took off her PJs (a full onesie) and got the fright of my life - her legs were covered in hives, like huge mozzie bites, and there were patches spreading on her arms :o I phoned BIL (married to SIL mentioned above) who's a paramedic and lives around the corner and he said to take her to emergency. DH came straight home and off we went.

The hives had subsided a bit by the time we got there but they were still really bad and DD was distressed. The car trip was awful, her eyes rolled back at one stage and she went a bit floppy and started coughing on all the drool. We think she was just a bit distressed though but it completely freaked us out.

They took her straight in and checked all her vitals - all good. Phew. The doctors think she had an allergic reaction to penicillin BUT it may have been the codeine in the Pain Stop but we can't be sure as she had both.

The doctor monitored her for 2.5 hours and gave her Phernergan (ironic hey :rolleyes:) and dosed her up on Panadol. The doctor said her throat is a bit inflamed but said it's not tonsillitis but most likely a virus and teething. She witnessed her drink a bottle of milk and said that was a really good sign as she was worried it was some other thing (can't remember the name) which is really nasty.

So we are home and DD is asleep. She stirred earlier and was so lethargic which freaked me out but I guess that understandable given the morning we've had - and the Phernergan. She did have a full bottle and Nurofen then so that was a good sign I think.

We have to monitor her and try to get a wee sample and get her checked out by our GP again tomorrow. She has to stay on the Phernergan for 3-4 days plus have regular doses of Nurofen and Panadol. No more antibiotics or codeine. We also have to see an allergy specialist to find out which drug was the culprit.

My god, is it too early for a wine?

Oh my goodness! You must have been so frightened. I'm glad you are home now and it seems like you got excellent treatment at the hospital. Hopefully your wee one feels better soon and you can work out her allergy :hug:

Did the medicine have colouring in it? My DD2 is allergic to penicillin in any shape or form and also couldn't have liquid medicine with certain colours

Hope the rash settles soon. Let your chemist know as they can put it on their records in case she is prescribed it again. This happened to DD2 recently which would have been really bad. I am so greatful to this chemist that he checked the script and kept it to ring the Dr himself.

Oh dear! I'm glad that DD is having a big sleep, she will be doing her best to get rid of all this too. :hug: Hope you find out what the culprit is that gave her the reaction.

Thanks girls :hug: It was so damn scary. We were so worried the swelling would get to her throat. I have so much admiration for parents coping with sick children. It scared the hell out of both DH and I but especially me, I completely panicked - I was hopeless! So glad DH kept calm. Gosh, so glad he was home from his business trip. I can't stop thinking what could have happened if it was even more severe - while she was sleeping :cry:

So glad she's ok. She's still sleeping and looks fine, thankfully. I'm so drained, emotionally exhausted

My DS1 has a suspected allergy to penicillin. When he was about 15 months old he was prescribed it, and a couple of hours after his first dose he started shaking (not badly), his teeth chattered and he got little p#ickly-looking spots on his hands and feet. Scared the hell out of me, but fortunately I got him back to the dr asap and they gave him an antihistamine, which fixed him. Now, they won't prescribe him penicillin until they know for sure if he's allergic to it.

So glad to hear your DD is doing well.

My son got hives when he was 11mths old...and yes, it scares the jeepers out of you. I dashed straight to the GP and within seconds he was being looked at by not 1, but 3 doctors. They monitored him for a while, and just said he's had an allergic reaction to something. (i reckon it was soap...but anyway). So i can understand how frightening it would have been pulling off her onsie....they look awful dont they?

Oh Taurean, that sounds horrific! How scary for you all. I'm glad that she is mostly okay now. I hope she gets better quickly. Huge :hug: for you all.
