Induction question.....(re pg after late loss)

warning long post! sorry :lol:

very quick background info:

okay....so with DS i was induced at 38 weeks and ended up with emergency c/s (labour had not started and he was going into fetal distress)

with DD, i had a VBAC. went into labour naturally at 41 +4, laboured at home for 8 hours, got to hospital, wasn't even 1cm!! :wall: eventually had gas, then pethadine, then an epidural. after 25 hours labour (14 hours officially to them :rolleyes:) DD was born with 11 minutes of pushing.

with J.........at 10:20 they put the gel in. i started getting contractions straight away. walked around my room, had to start breathing through contractions, they were getting worse. at 3, went to delivery suite, did an internal, wasn't 1cm AGAIN!! broke my waters, put the drip in (petocin or something?? not sure) went in the bath for an hour and a half, got out, internal was 4 cm, and within 20 minutes, fully dilated and J was born after 6 minutes of pushing....

so my question is, if i get pregnant again, and want to be induced at 38 weeks or so, (for my nerves sake) what are the chances that the labour will be as quick as J's? was that so quick because they would have given me stronger doses of the drip? and because i wasn't being monitored? or is there a chance my next labour could be as easy as that? anyone with experience? i just don't want another c/s, but i don't want another labour like DD's....

not sure if this post makes sense, but thanks anyway for reading.....am obviously just thinking about the future, i think we have decided we want another baby, but i wouldn't want to wait till i go naturally, i think i would be an emotional wreck, so would probably look into induction....i'm seeing my OB tomorrow....thanks ladies xxx

Your thread makes perfect sense. Sadly there is no way to predict how you will cope with a future induction. It depends very much on how ready your body is to labour. Before you decide whether or not to induce you can ask your OB or midwife to give you, in their opinion, the likelihood that the induction will be successful. Then you can use this information to decide whether to induce or not. I'm so sorry you are having to think about this :hug:

I'm not sure hun, I went into labour at 35 weeks (no induction) with Riley and the whole labour was 11 hrs and he was delivered naturally (i had a perfect labour except we had lost him). With Sophie at 39 weeks my blood pressure was really high so Ob induced me at 7pm thursday night and by 9pm Friday night they still hadn't been able to stabilise my blood pressure and i was dialating sooooo slowly also she didn't want to come down and was sitting high so they decided on an emergency c-section and she was born at 10.10pm. i really didn't want a c-section either.
But it's different for everyone just have a chat with your ob they will be able to help you decide.

I dont have experience with induction but I can tell you the discussion I had with an OB. He's very senior at a public hospital. Their policy is to usually induce the baby after a stillbirth at 38wks. With a live baby they need to monitor, as the induced ctxs can be so much stronger than spontaneous labour. You can discuss with your OB about starting gently. My understanding is induction is often easier if you're close to going naturally.

In our case, he doesnt recommend induction, due to risk of escalating interventions. As bub died from a genetic disorder, we know it wasnt the pregnancy or birth. However, I also have too much information about things that can go wrong, so this kid has been instructed to be fully grown and be born sometime between 37-39 wks. We'll make the decision wrt induction closer to the date, depending on our mental state.

It's normal for you to be thinking of all this in advance. Having a plan can give you a sense of control.

with izzy i was induced just with the drip because my cervix was all ready to go, from putting in the drip to pushing was an hour and a half, so very very quick. with J from the time the drip started to pushing was 13 hours, my cervix wasnt ready but i went from 5cms to pushing in 2 hours, so cant really answer it, but i was really really suprised it took so long, but then again my mental state could have had something to do with it too.
i'll be induced at 36-37 weeks next time, so most likely i'll have an unripe cervix again, this time i'll opt for the gels though

thanks everyone! turns out because i've had a previous c/s, if i was to have another baby, they won't induce me cause of the risks of uterine rupture, so i would have to go with an elective c/s. oh well, i guess in the end whatever saves my mental state and gets baby out okay :dunno:

As hard as the end of any pregnancy is the reality is with an artificial induction you just never know. How hard your cervix is impacts on the time along with many other factors. If you can allow babe to come on their time, by doing so you keep the risk of interventions right down, avoid the possibility of a cascade of intervention and are more likely to have the kind of birth that you want.

Also hun you have pushed out two babes the normal way, you can do so a third time. There is so much miss information out there about c/s and normal birth afterwards. The risk are no greater then your first VBAC, if anything I would say given you have done it twice it would be safe to do so again.

I once attended a home birth with a mother who have 2 c/s and had her third at home. The risk of uterine rupture is not as high as some OB's make it out to be. I suggest you shop around for an OB who suits your wants when it comes to birthing or better yet an independent midwife who is not bound by hospital rules and policies and can talk open and honestly with you. Many are happy to do this over the phone at no charge.

The risk of induction after caesarean is that there is more chance the uterine would rupture, leading to blood loss and risk to the baby. As sad as it sounds the risk of a repeat CS possibly was greater than this as J had already passed.

yeh, i asked my OB about this yesterday. he basically said with inductions, if things were to go wrong, they would go wrong quickly, and would be a high chance of not saving baby and/or my uterus, so i just don't want to take that risk. not sure i could wait it out to go natural, as i was nearly 42 weeks with DD before i went into labour. don't think i could handle that. so if he says the safest option is c/s, then i'll believe him!

i know!! im so glad ive got someone i actually trust and feel comfortable with. you know the fact that yesterday he spent like 25 minutes with me just talking to me and answering all my questions. i think he's worth the money, the other Dr through the public hospital was all right, but the OB guy, i think i've just got that connection with him. hopefully, if i get pregnant, he helps us have a happy and healthy baby :crossfingers:
