Driving from Melbourne to Sydney?

First: Are we crazy for thinking we can do this with a 3-month-old? :lol:

As some of you may know from facebook, I wanted to go to Supanova (those not in the know: major geek-fest) this past weekend but didn't have the spare cash for two tickets (I couldn't/wouldn't have gone without Scott) so I joked that we may have to travel to Sydney to catch it up there in June. Well! Scott took me seriously, and it may end up happening :leap:

We've decided to drive up there, since it's probably cheaper on the whole and we can use the drive as part of our little holiday. But I haven't been to Sydney in 11 years (Paralympics, baby!), I don't remember what stops/tourist sites are essential on the journey. This is where you come in. I need suggestions. What are the must-sees on the trip? What's a waste of time?

How about once we get to Sydney - where's the best place to stay for a couple of nights without breaking the bank? What should we check out/stay away from?

Not entirely related...but what dates are you going? And for how long? Because, yanno...the BB Sydney meetup is on the weekend of the 10th...just sayin'...maybe a good time for Scott and Amelia to have a daddy daughter night ;)

i will bust my brain as its been 10 yrs since i done that road trip last (and in reverse, syd to melb!) it is do-able with bub, i remember we left petersham in syd at 6:30am and with a few stops we arrived in oakliegh arround 6-7 that night just give you a idea on times.
i remember 2 stops we made off the top of my head, one was a little place, violet town had a nice quiet park we stoped at, and another i cant qwuiet remember, it had a old submarine i think, something to do with the war? ill do some more thinking, and ask my aunty ill be back!!

We stopped at the Ettamogah Pub for a look and a laugh, near Albury. Broke the trip up for us a bit. There's also the dog on the tuckerbox in Gundagai if you're interested in that sort of thing.

In Sydney, make sure you go to Harry's Pies (called Harry's Cafe de Wheels) in Woolloomooloo (lol, I love saying Woolloomooloo), just amazing pies. Open 24 hours - apparently it's busiest at around 2am with the nightclub crowds! Their chilli con carne pie is fantastic.

Definitely doable with a 3 mth old! She will generally just need stops for feeds but will sleep, entertain herself easily at that age, especially if you sit with her some of the time. Do it while you can - the thought of doing it with a nearly 4 yr old and a 2.5 yr old does my head in!!

I've done a similar length car trip when the twins were tiny, and it was absolutely fine. I just pulled into the side of the road and breastfed/changed nappies as they dictated, and kept driving otherwise. It's much harder with older children who demand entertainment and exercise on a long car trip, I really enjoyed my long trip with just me and the twins :)

Car trips are so much easier when they are little. We've done heaps of trips from syd to brissy (actually orange to sunshine coast), and it was so easy when they are newborns. The only time they normally want something is when they are hungry or need changing. The syd to melb trip (dont that a couple of times too) is is really easy and there's heaps of greta places to stop along the way.

Actually we normally travel that much in the car, that our relatives joke that if we were in Europe, the girls' passports would be full already! So it is doable!

Nope, we'd be going a week later... Damn! I thought that was in July :(
