Protein during pregnancy
Hi!!
I've been struggling with meals lately. I am eating just not a heck of a lot. Before being pg I ate a lot of protein (chicken, eggs, bit of cheese, yoghurt, tuna etc) but recently I can't stomach chicken or eggs and cheese is a bit hit and miss so I know my protein intake has dropped significantly to about a cup of milk with breakfast and a bit of yoghurt and the occassional tuna. I eat red meat but not too much.
So I've heard that protein in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters are real important for both mum and bub and should be increased to atleast 70g (average person should have 40g) per day.
I read an article that crab meat can be eaten as well as prawns and shrimp. I always thought that these we no no's during pregnancy so have avoided it. The crab meat sounds real appealing to me too but don't want to go there incase you aren't allowed to!
Thoughts anyone?

You could try seafood if it's cooked. I can't remember why it's not reommended. I would cook it myself, not buy from a restaurant, to make sure it's clean and fresh before cooking.
Legumes and nuts are other sources of protein. Miso soup is another good one. I take packets to work with me. Can you eat chicken in a soup?

All vegies have protein and it is pretty rare to have protein deficiency in a developed country. That said you can have things like nuts, lentils, chickpeas, peanut butter, cheese, tofu, tempeh. There are some good vegetarian products with high protein that might be easier to stomach. Have you ever used Calorie King? It is an online counter for calories etc but you can also choose to count other things like protein or salt etc. Maybe check it out if you are worried about how much you are getting. HTH
