...Hoping someone might be able to help?

DD is 2.5years..
with a variety of issues and still no closer to finding a name for her them..

...About 5 months ago she got a mosquiot bite on her face which she picked at..she has'nt stopped!!! we have tried bandaids, of various descriptions..leaving her to it..she has had a staph infection that needed antibiotics..she is very sensory and she was given a surgical scrub which she loved nearly put her to sleep..she then took to scrbbing herself and picking her face at the same time................. :wall:

low and behold the other day another spot I guess a normal blemish appeared on her face and she is now picking that as well as the original sore..I have shown her the blood all over her face..told her how yucky it is..showed her a sore on her leg..in the hope that she might pick at it and see what she is doing and might not like it??? She looked at me like I was insane..and gave me her word for sore..

I have seen a guy who lives around here, he often has tissue stuck on sores..(think Norman Gunston) but he seems to have other problems and he is constantly picking at his face..I seen him again the other day without anything on his face and he has scars all over it..not just scars chunks of his face have gone..it freaked me out and i can't stop thinking about it and need to break this habit and soon...No one has answers..well not practical ones eg: paed is lovely but said put mittens on her hands..yeah right!!!

She is a beautiful girl in nature and looks, people are very attracted to her and often comment on her but for how long?..her face can heal up then she starts pickign again..
Others must have faced similar issues..got any solutions???any thoughts..it is so depressing and I am beside myself..I know that might sound a bit stupid with lots of other issues going on..its just it seems something that should be able to be fixed..and I should be able to do it ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????:wall:

Here is more of her story...
late to crawl and walk, very placid and is very lean..( although she eats loads, a bottomless pit)
at about at 12 months she had the mum, bub, dad type words..then nan... pa..along with some others....at 17months she stopped saying everything and picked up on word which was bubba only ...about to have another baby we just thought it was what was going on...but she did'nt regain any of her previous words until about 3 months ago when she said mum again..followed slowly by No, then yes and a few others.

Sometimes she says something only to never say it again..and you can try to get her to say it, she watches your mouth closely but seems to draw a blank trying to get it out..we are currently up to approx 20 single words..a lot are'nt reconizeable to others and what she does say sounds a bit strange sort of garbled..perhaps hearing impared!!! but all that side has been checked, with no issues with hearing or processing..
she is overally friendly mostly with older men..to the point she will touch them, to get attention...wants to kiss strangers goodbye...has some other odd behaviours eg: we stopped going to playgroup as I could'nt keep her out of the toilet bowl..she displays risky behaviour climbing /jumping, but screams if she is laid on a change table etc..she acts as though she thinks she is about to fall, grasping the edge...same with slides..to name a feew thigns but the list is lengthy...but only if we are with her..mostly if she is doing it herself she is okay..

I always thought she played with others..but have since noticed that she plays alongside other kids and with her brother and sisters actually destroys their games..

I have been chasing this since she was 18 months old and have no answers..autism has been discussed but she does'nt tick all the boxes and they are now leaning away from that...global delay is the latest name for her issues..we have been seeing an OT until 2 weeks ago when I was told she did'nt really require it any more..we have just got funding for a speech therapist so she is going fortnightly now.. a series of BT show nothing wrong except a vitamin D defincancy.

I don't really know what to do next, is there something i should be doing??

People ar starting to give me unwanted advice and stories on toliet training..why she is'nt being friendly and answer questions or saying thank-you then when you say she is unable to do it..they go the
"ohh yes the others do her talking for her"
or relay how their distant cousin did'nt talk until they were 20 and now is a brain surgeon etc : you know the ones!!

Dansta's DS has something called anglemans syndrome, have you heard of that?? its sounds sort of similar :hug:

Oh, and quickly, what was the OT's rationale for 'not needing' further therapy?? From what you've described I'd say ongoing OT is really important.

With the exception of the face picking, you have just described my eldest son at aged 2.5 years. He is tall for his age, so people would ask him about kinder and he would just look blank and I was forced to explain that he was only 2 and completely non verbal. I was criticised for his behaviour, lack of eye contact, lack of toilet training, etc, over and over from all the well meaning strangers who felt it was their business. He said lots of words once, then never again. There was nothing he could say regularly, we used sign language for food, drink, etc, because he would just tantrum and get frustrated otherwise.

Long story short I took him to a chiropractors about his knees (he was knock kneed) and she adjusted something at the back of his neck. He started talking about ten minutes later, and was massively improved in every aspect of his behaviour within a few weeks. He is still a whithdrawn, serious boy, and he still needed some speech therapy. But chiro really helped him. Have you tried it, and if not would you be willing to? I was very sceptical when my chiropractor said she could help, but she explained it as all the knowledge was just sitting in his brain (all the words he had said once) but the information was getting blocked when it was trying to leave his brain, so my fixing his neck (vertebrae out of place which was causing a disruption in the flow of information) she basically removed the blockage and the words all came flowing. Once he could speak the rest of his behaviour calmed down or was easier dealt with because we understood one another.

Yes, I thought of Angelman's as well. It is a genetic chromosomal disorder (I think it's a deletion on chromosome 15?). Usually associated with a global delay and a happy, friendly disposition (such as wanting to kiss stranger's!!). Poor verbal skills, but better comprehension.

However, AS is also associated with seizure's, microcephaly (small head) and ataxia (jerky gait and movement) in most cases. Does your lovely DD show any of these symptoms? AS is diagnosed with a combination of genetic testing and clinical presentation.

So hard when you know there is a problem but can't put your finger on it. I'm sorry, I don't know how to get your DD to stop picking, must drive you (and her?) nuts!

Angelmans syndrome? I don't think so? no seizures, no small head, does ahve abit of a strange walk, a bit of a tip toe not constantly though and very clumsynot cordinated can't climb etc..and trips over all the time.
Definatley not against Chiros have been on a few occasiosn myself and at the stage where I think its worth a go.
Further OT work, not really sure why not?? I always thought it seemed like a nice play date for Poppy and she is very social with the OT>>> OT is very young and Poppy is unusual.. I always feel who ever i visit that they think I am trying to find things wrong with her and maybe I am..its just that something does'nt seem right?
Had a bit of a heated discussion tonight with DH..who commented that he does'nt think there is anything wrong with her!!!! WTF :( I asked him why she did'nt talk and he just thinks she will eventually and what about the speech regression "just the baby" was his answer..what about the saying something once then not being able to say it again..he jsut thinks its a normal stage a bit lazy etc.. risk taking but afraid of falling off the change table and the list goes on....

OMG!!! Now I really feel up against it..I just asummed we were on the same page, maybe there is nothing wrong with her but his damn genes..it has made me doubt myself..I find myself watching her and thinking maybe I am wrong, then she does something completely strange and offbeat and I'm back to trying to find answers.
For ages I have'nt done anything..and now I just can't stand it anymore ( always second guessing myself, always wondering, always trying to get help for her) and i really need to talk, but feel guilty at the same time because she does'nt seem( BAD ) enough..so many people are in worse situations.......

Pam, I'd be worried too, particularly when you have your older three as benchmarks for those same development milestones. I can't begin to imagine how frustrating it must be to not be getting any answers from the specialists. Sometimes I wonder just how good their training was and whether they bother with ongoing professional development... Just put mittens on her, I mean really... Sigh. And there's no way to review who's good and who's to be avoided. I'm really sorry that you're going through all this worry for Poppy and I hope that some answers turn up soon (for Poppy and for yourself).

Blackduckies, just wanted to offer hugs and to say that if you believe something is not right with your DD then you are probably right. Don't give up. Don't take no for an answer. My sister fought for a diagnosis for SIX years for my niece 'who couldn't possibly be' autistic as she didn't tick all the boxes. Finally, at the age of 8, she was diagnosed as having full blown autism.

A friend of mines little boy had issues with his speech. It was like he could understand everything but he couldn't get any words out. She was worried that he wasn't talking by the age of 2 and he ended up being diagnosed with Apraxia. Not sure if that could be a reason for your DD and the no talking thing....but if I was you I'd get some more opinions.

It's a shame your DH isn't supporting you and your concerns. Mummy intuition is pretty good, so if you don't feel right....just follow your heart.

Hugs Hun, I would take get to get a proper assessment. If she has sensory issues, she could be under-responsive and the picking actually feels good and relaxing to her?
All you have to do is talk to your gp and have her/him wrote you a referral, she's still young so that's a really good thing as far as early intervention.

Yeddi or christy would be great people to pm for advice, those two are so knowledgeable about sensory issues. I honestly don't know where I would be without there love and advice.

Thank you all, I will keep plodding along..being in a country area albeit a larger one it is still difficult accessing really good help, or maybe they are there but need finding???
BUt not about to give up and will keep looking in here whne I have the time.
