Ready for big bed?

DD is 13 months old and mostly co sleeps. I have noticed she wakes more often in the cot as she seems to move a lot in her sleep and hitting the side of the cot wakes her up. Watching her wriggle and spin around in my bed last night made me think I am never going to get her to sleep a decent block of time in that damn cot!

Is 13 months too early? She knows how to get off our bed safely (she taught herself to slide of backwards) and I am considering getting her an ensemble and then making sure her room is well baby proofed. At this point she falls asleep if I rock her when she goes into the cot, but will put herself to sleep if I sit next to her in bed which is making me think she might be ready???

Has anyone had success / failure with the transition from co sleeping to their own bed?

I have a friend who had twins and they have been in single beds since day dot. Give it a shot! The worst that can happen is that you have an extra bed around for later :)

My DD went into a single bed no probs at 16months. She didn't even have a rail. Similarly to your DD she hit herself on the cot just about everytime she breathed....bed has been much easier.
DS has never slept in a cot, but at 2 and a bit i have yet to tackle the own bed thing. He goes to sleep so easily in my bed (DH works away)....so subbing for tips.

My DP works away as well :) It is so much easier when he is at work to just take her to bed with me! When he is home however......I wouldnt
mind at least a few hours of .... Adult... Bed time lol

Meercat, I have the same problem with Cam, who's now taken over our bed as when DF was away o/s I'd drag him off to my bed at any chance and how he thinks big bed is for him!!!!!!!! DF is now back home and Cam sleeps most night in our bed. I wake up almost everyday with shoulder, neck, back pain and headaches later because of it (I sleep on the very edge of the bed now :(). But Cam isn't ready for big bed all by himself just yet.......he wouldn't know how to get out of it. GL hun, I think the big bed for Tiah is an excellent idea!!

We have been talking about this idea here too! Was hoping to transition DD to cot but it doesn't seem to be working so thinking bout ditching the cot and going straight to single bed or mattress on the floor. I was going to post to see if anyone else had done it with a 12 month old.

SOme nights she will start in her cot ok, but re-settling is difficult if not impossible and she always end up in with us from about midnight. If i feed her to sleep and leave her sleeping in our bed however, she will often sleep for 4 hours or so even if we are not there. So in our bed, she sleeps longer and it's a much nicer experience for me and her getting her to sleep.

If she had a single bed or mattress, then it would be easier for DH or myself to help her get back to sleep but also used to sleeping by herself. If we get a bed, have been thinking about getting a safety rail too.

THe only concerns are keeping her in one place when she wakes, especially as she has just started walking and secondly that at the moment her cot is up against the side of our bed acting as a safety rail and how to make sure she doesn't fall if she does come in to our bed. She sleeps both sides of me, but i would be stressing more if she was on my outside and there was nothing to keep her for falling (stress= less sleep for me). For the first, i figure i can make sure that our room or her room is safe and just have a baby gate on the door or the door closed.

For a little person, she takes up a lot of room on our bed and DH or i are often on the edge or waking up with sore bits.

That is my biggest concern as well. That she will wake up and then somehow hurt herself?

DP says if we get a bed we get a QS so she can use it for longer... Which means it will have to go in her room straight away. He seems to think she needs the physical contact to sleep ( she touches us all night) and that it won't help. My opinion is it is worth a try and that resettling her will be easier on ME than in the cot you know??

Another issue for me is her movement monitor wont really work with a QS bed and without it I will be a mess. (even with the monitor I worry) Arg it is so hard!!!!

I know what you mean about aches and pains! I went for a shoulder massage and I had such big knots in my muscles they couldn't get them out! I am sure they thought I slept in a cardboard box or something ..... I wish! Lol

We have thought about that too! We have been considering upgrading our bed to a King (maybe we know subconsciously we will prob be sharing for a while still?) and moving our bed into the spare room. There is a waterbed in there at the moment, which i love but not so good for all visitors or little people. I would want to put rails on both sides but it would make resettling so much easier.

I have never used a movement monitor but we have a noise baby monitor. Sometimes i think a video monitor would be handy.

I saw a single bed on ebay that has two beds that can be seperate singles -at a low height- or on top of each other to make one single or next to each other as a queen. funky idea but it was made of dodgy wood.

I'm wondering whether it is better to try getting her to sleep in our room on a single bed/mattress and then move her or try to move her into her room and bed at same time. Will prob go option 1 cos i think it has more chance of success and i can see that she is ok.

Funny you mention bed sizes. We upgraded to a king so that there was a bit more room and DS has our queen bed in his room. It does work, I'm just too lazy to get up in the night anymore lol.
He has a safety rail on our bed but not on his own as he sleeps in the middle IYKWIM as opposed to on one side.

DD never had a rail and we put pillows down for the first while, but she never fell out at all.

Ok. First night in her new bed!!

We opted for a double bed mattress on the floor of her room. We took her with us and got new sheets, quilt cover and even a pillow (she loves pretending to sleep on mine)

After an hour of playing, walking around the mattress, bringing me every book she owns, filling her nappy (ew) asking to nurse and then calling for daddy into the monitor (haha hard not to laugh during that one) ....... She is asleep!!!!

Lets see how long this lasts! I predict I will be in there a million times tonight... She looks so tiny in that huge bed!

Yesterday i was taking the cot apart to get it out of our room to replace it with a mattress, and then discovered that i can actually remove a side and keep the cot whole. I have been cursing for months because i thought i couldn't do it without adding extra bits to stabilise it. :doh:

DD was with me when i was doing it (and trying to steal the bolts:p) and had a bit of a play. I put the cot up against our bed with the open side to our bed.

Last night she went to sleep at 8.30 (pretty exciting just that bit) in the cot, DH resettled her at 10 (he could lie on the bed while she went to sleep) and then....she stayed there until 5!!! That is a first for us. She half woke a coule of times but i just put my arm in and she went back to sleep.

I fed her at 5 and she is asleep in our bed with DH. Pretty good for a first night.

Hi all!

The big girl bed is FREAKING AMAZING!!!!

Tiah took a 3.5 hour nap today (after settling herself to sleep in five minutes while I read a book next to her!)

And after about two pages of a bedtime story, she took the book off me, put it on the floor and snuggled in to sleep!!!!

She has not been in our bed for the last two nights, and that is a first for her... Ever!! One thing we have noticed is that she really loves her pillow, she smuggles right in and starts to fall asleep straight away!

She is still waking about three times, but now I just sit next to her for a few minutes and she is right back to sleep. I have fallen asleep with her a few times and woken up a few hours later.... But bedtime is just so much nicer now.

I know this will change like every thing to do with parenting does, but for now it is nice to know something worked!
